Buffett for Beginners
My wife and I are taking 4 of our friends to the show in Frisco in late April.
Our friends don't really know much about Buffett (except of course for Margaritaville and Cheesburger). I want to make a CD for them to listen to so that they can get aquainted with some of Buffetts songs.
What songs (10-15) should I put on the CD? Or is there a CD that you think would be best (I was thinking of just giving them Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays)? They should'nt necessarily be your favorite songs, just songs that they can get accustomed to so they have a good time and can participate at the concert.
Thanks for your input!

Get them "Songs you Know by Heart"
(the yellow cover)-I know, I know, but, for newbies, it gets them hooked, *we* (us seasoned Parrottheads) know them all and like the more obscure songs, but the newbies get hooked on these.
They will listen and go "wow, I didnt know Buffett Sang *that* song"
*THEN* you can branch them out to the 'really good stuff'

Live in Anguilla... great songs, great mix of old and new / standard and rare, great arrangements!fsuprthed wrote:My wife and I are taking 4 of our friends to the show in Frisco in late April.

what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
I'd agree-that is how mu friends introduced me to Buffett music. and, your friends will come to the concert familiar with a number of songs you know they will hear.parrottheadbaby wrote:Get them "Songs you Know by Heart"

I was too new my first time to appreciate the songs you never hear live, but it was really nice to recognize a good number of songs, and sing along with them.
Then throw is a bunch of others--the Anguilla recording is great for that!

I'd prefer Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays... OPH and Fins are essential to their intro before a concert, plus it includes BEG and Southern Cross. And they probably won't hear at the concert, but awesome nonetheless, Tin Cup Chalice, Tryin to Reason, Love and Luck, Fruitcakes...parrottheadbaby wrote:Get them "Songs you Know by Heart"

Just as the Yellow ALbum is a good stepping stone I would also include a cover or 2 and my reasoning being maybe the people know those songs too and can appreciate Jimmy's tweak on them.
I remember my 1st show and appreciasting the covers because I was able to sing along. Once I dove deeper into the song catalog I became one of the - - - His songs are so much better than these covers people.
Meet Me In Margaritaville is a good point of reference too.
I also agree with the Live show theory.

The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

At the time I got my bestest friend into Buffett I used the yellow album and took her to a concert- MMIM wasn't even a pipe dream at that time. TTS is great to give them a semi taste of the live experience. And definitely let them know about fins and salt salt salt.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

It may be a little dated now but Feeding Frenzy was the hook line and sinker for me. It may be a timing thing but I always thought it gave a better feel of a Buffett show before they got so huge. It's a little cheesy now, but that was Buffett in the late 80's and this CD represented the outbreak of that to me. If it's a long enough trip add TTS for the Southern Cross cover and the great verison of Tin Cup Chalice, and I'd say your all set.
There's no need for it to be 5 o'clock somewhere when it comes to boat drinks!!!!

I would recommend that you have your friend listen to Take the Weather With You and Lisence To Chill.
When I started listening to JB last summer the first albums I bought were A1A, MMIM, and Take The Weather With You.

throw them to the wolves! i went to vegas last fall with a friend who was the same way, basically cheeseburger and margaritaville, before the show he said he wasnt sure that he would stay for the whole show seeing as he didnt know many songs. I laughed. it took maybe 4 or 5 songs for his shirt to come off, go over his head, and yell the chorus to any song. it took him a few days to get over it, but he had a blast. i say let them go from nothing to paradise
If I had it all to do over again, I'd just get myself drunk and I'd jump right back in...
