There would still be jobs in the US
If our labor laws were more like this
This is another reason I pay attention to where the products I purchase are made.

Re: There would still be jobs in the US
I believe we would. Since so many don't have a problem purchasing foreign made goods with forced labour, if we had forced labour here, the distribution charges would be less resulting in lower prices. Although maybe forced labour wouldn't work in the US since our government wouldn't cane people that refused to work. Hmmmm, maybe George Bush can get caning legalized.RinglingRingling wrote:

I love the smell of 'popcorn' in the morning . . .
Hey . . . Malaysia has over 3 billion barrels in proven oil reserves.
Maybe we should 'invade' them to liberate the slave laborers and bring 'freedom' to Malaysians in general . . .
Oh . . . I also heard from my neighbor that when a friend of a friend of a friend of his son was down there on vacation a few years ago he saw, with his own eyes, what could only be, from his description, a factory for making WMDs . . .
If that isn't enough, I have it on good authority (my neighbor's son, who by the way watches Fox News a lot) that the Malaysians have been trying to buy uranium in Africa.
I think it's a 'slam dunk'.
First, we'll starve the Malaysians (and the slave laborers) for about ten years with a food and medicine embargo. Then, we'll drop lots of bombs on the Malaysians (and the slave laborers) to soften them up. Finally, we'll invade Malaysia, liberating both Malaysians (and the slave laborers . . . and the oil) and be welcomed as heroes . . . eventually.
I don't see any flaws in the plan at this point . . . I'd better get Cheney on the phone . . .

Before just charging in blindly, we need at least 12 ignored UN resolutions and economic sanctions. In the meantime caning and forced labour in the US will provide competition and bring the companies that support this type of behavior back to the US.flyboy55 wrote:INVADE!! INVADE!! INVADE!!

I think NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) has had the effect of moving manufacturing away from jurisdictions with higher living standards, stricter environmental regulations and effective labor laws that protect workers, to jurisdictions which have less of all these things.Snowparrot wrote:Maybe if we didn't have NAFTA we wouldn't have jobs here either!AdamBomb8 wrote:Maybe if we didn't have NAFTA there would be more jobs
Fat lot of good it does, having the Amaricans impose ridiculous taxes on us that kill our manufacturing and forestry industries!
In terms of ranking these factors, I'd put Canada at the top, the U.S. way down in the middle, and Mexico at the bottom - just the way they look on a map (held right way up).
When our politicians mention 'fixing' NAFTA and Canada in the same breath, I think they're either misinformed or playing politics. Canadians have already got the short end of the NAFTA stick (my apologies
Mexicans didn't make out that great either, if you consider the conditions under which they work in the maquiladoras, however much better these places may be than those further south in Mexico.
But even the Mexicans have lost out now, with China providing some of the cheapest (forced) labor in the world.
We're all $crewed!

Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
