Most things in other countries, political, sports, or whatever the subject, IS reported on US News channels, and I listen and learn. Some things interest me, some do not. It's pretty much all in how one was raised, and what subjects you're interested in.
yes - but the point here is that they are not reported as much as in other countries. One of my theories is that there is so many of you, so much crime to report, so many accidents - all that sort of thing - that there is not enough time to report on other things in the world.

But - I think that for example world sport -when the USA is competing - doesnt get as much as your domestic sport - and to most countries - watching their country play another in a sport - is bigger than the domestic sports.
The simple fact is there is not a big demand for "international" sports reporting or broadcasts. So what's wrong with that?? That's just the way it is here, what Americans grew up and are comfortable with. It's not as if we're completely stupid like a lot of the world assumes. The American Soccer League wasn't even formed until 1966 and major league soccer wasn't played until 1996. In other words, soccer is a relatively "new" sport in the US compared to our domestic sports. The news sources are going to report what gets them ratings - not what other people across the world think they should be reporting. Across the country the news reporting in the different markets is vastly different. Again it's that ratings game. If you're the general manager of a news station your job isn't to report the world news or world sports - it's to get your station the highest ratings. How do your do that - by giving your audience

Hey Connie - dont think I said you were stupid - I have met you - you are not stupid [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

The USA media - does not give people the opportunity to see what is happening around the world - that is pretty much what I think - as much as some other countries do. This then leads to maybe people not having as much knowledge about the world as they otherwise might have

(and I am not saying I am an expert - I am far from it!! I listen to some - but sports is my main thing for international news)
again I say it all boils down to the ratings. If you have local news on one channel getting higher ratings than another channel showing world news, then the channel showing world news will eventually change it's format to what the people are watching in an effort to be more competitive. If they are not competitive, then they don't have advertisement dollars which are a mainstay to any television station. In other words, it's really not the media that decides on what the American people should watch but rather the American people showing what they want thru the Nielson Ratings.
creeky wrote:but in jest here - you need to keep some people off tv! There is a video doing the rounds here - specifically having a go at how the people in the USA knows nothing about the world - a girl on "are you smarter than a 5th grader" that has never heard of the country "Hungary" ... cause the only country she has heard of to do with eating is Turkey    - it does not help the cause (nor the girl on Amazing Race that wanted ot know what country London was in) ..... cause out of the USA - that is the impression that the world has - from most people I have known and the media I have seen ....
you get no argument from me that some people do not need to be on tv. However, how fair is it to assume that the few people you see such as mentioned above from America is an accurate representation of a country with the population of 301,139,947 (July 2007 est.)
creeky wrote:What I get disappointed in is that I take the time to learn USA Things - like I know the rules of gridiron, baseball etc ... yet whenever I mention anything like rugby league - reaction I get is that "dont know about it - so it cant be good" or "dont understand it - got my own football" - you can never have too many things to enjoy and there can be good sports you have not learnt yet outside of the USA .....
Just as you get disappointed in people here not learning more about your sports, I get disappointed when people over there assume that all Americans are just like what you see on tv.

As far as sports go, we've got several ESPN channels that show us other sports. Before that it was the Wide World of Sports that spanned the globe to bring us the constant variety of sports, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. You're assuming that just because the people you interact with don't know or care about rugby than all Americans are the same, which really isn't the case. Rugby is played over here as well - it's just not as a popular sport here. I'm sure there are people in Australia that are not as well versed as you are on American sports. I'm sure there are people there that feel the same about US sports as several that you have encountered. Perhaps some of it can be from the fact that rugby was started in Britain and the US was founded by people wanting to get away from all things British? I don't know. All I know is that between football, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball, track & field, gymnastics, soccer, rodeo and horse racing rules, my brain is full of sports knowledge and I'm running out of place up there to store any more   Does that mean I'm not going to go to a rugby match accompanied by someone knowledgeable of the game - no it doesn't. I also believe some of the difference between you and those you interact with is that you do visit the States. How many people that you interact with from here have visited or will visit Australia?

Problem is, you're comparing apples & oranges. People in Europe may very well be more familiar with what happens in other countries. They're all packed in on top of each other. The US is the sole remaining superpower, so of course we're going to get play on everyone else's newscasts. We're also across fairly large bodies of water from everyone else.

The more appropriate comparison would be how much we know about the states that surround the one we live in.....and most of the local news channels cover that. (I get MD, WV, VA, PA, and DC news on my local channels)

I understand totally what you are saying Connie - I am continually telling people here that not all americans are like that on TV ... .(though some are) .... same as I guess a lot of non australians think we go around killing crocodiles and yelling "crikey" .... when we dont (cept my BIL  ) It is all about perception - and I guess I am stating what the perception is and I guess some of the posts from others pretty well confirm that perception. Whether it is right or wrong - up to the individual - I have said I prefer to know world things, others dont - up to them I guess .....

I really like having a "discussion" with you - you do it in a GREAT spirit!!!

And I wont take anyone to a "rugby" game - its not my favourite sport - but Rugby league is :P :P (there is a difference!!)

and watch out US Swim team - at our olympic trials this week - world records are being broken [smilie=battingeyes.gif] 8)

And for the people I interact with? Bit of a mix - one has lived there a few times for a year at a time ... others never want to visit cause of the "perception" (which I tell them - stay away from LA and NYC and pretty much they are normal folk  and it is a pretty place to go and see - so I do my bit!) and some that have gone for a holiday and gone to LA and NYC etc only - which is where you will not find the "real people" like I do ... you just have "small" interactions say in a store - whereas I like to go visit people, stay in their homes and experience the culture.

OK deal - however as I have been to two NFL games, a NHL game and a NBL game - you have to come to an aussie rules game and a cricket game as well  (bring a book for the cricket - just like baseball - cricket live is like watching paint dry - something better viewed at home on TV!)

but do you eat pasta? Do you eat Pizza? do you eat Kebabs? Do you eat rice? All cultures have had an input and will continue to do so .....

we were mainly a european and english based country - but most of our diet is slowly becoming an asian diet ...... due to the immigration.

You have mexicans flooding across the border - they have an influence ... the African Americans have had an influence .....

Just cant stop the influences!
And you know one aussie and you drink Bundy Ginger beer .. you will be having a vegemite sandwich with it before too long   [smilie=battingeyes.gif]
