Nurse Uniforms

Post by krusin1 »

The tonsils/adenoids thread brought this to mind...

Dear wife is a nurse, and goes to work every day in scrubs (light blue, drawstring waist.)

Back when I was growing up, nurses wore the starched white dress/uniform thing (cap optional.)

Long story short... dear wife and I have this discussion fairly regularly.

I think nurses ought to go back to the starched white thing, as it inspires feelings of confidence as well as clean/sterile. IMNSHO, scrubs aren't much more than glorified pajamas and nurses nowadays don't look as nice and professional as most convenience store clerks.

She says scrubs are better because the starched white thing is scary/ominous. Wearing colorful scrubs makes things friendlier, and puts patients more at ease, while also being cheaper and easier to keep clean.

So, what do you think? If you were in a hospital or doctor's office, would you prefer the nurses be in starched whites or colorful scrubs?

(And for my wife's sake, let's skip all the "nurse fantasy" bits.)

I don't care. Let them wear what they want. But if I had to chose, I would have to agree with your wife. The nurse Cratchet thing just gives me the creeps. Mom and sister are both nurses, one works on a floor and the other is in ICU. They would agree with your wife as well. Sorry

The colorful scrubs are soothing to me.. I like them. :)

Can you get me a few pairs???

Really, when I had my son 20some years ago most all the nurses were in scrubs - late at night I had an IV come out, and the Head Nurse (complete with all white dress and starched hat) came in to fix it.. she made me uncomfortable, although she was very efficient.

Scrubs. I think the starched white outfit is too old fashioned and has alot of negative thoughts associated with it.
I am no longer fighting my inner demons. We are on the same side now.

I don't care what they wear but whatever it is they shouldn't wear it on their commute to work. I see people wearing scrubs all the time when I'm walking to my office in the morning. I can only imagine the bacteria they pick up walking the streets of NYC or riding the subway. :o

I'm in the "I'm all for scrubs" category, but I agree, the clothing shouldn't be worn TO work, nor should "outside shoes" be worn in a medical setting w/out booties. Yick.

Negative thoughts?

I'd think there would be more, um, nurse-fettish-positive-thoughts associated with it. The whole starched-white is still the fantasy-of-choice in that regard. I don't see too many adult entertainment references about women in scrubs.

I think the colorful/fun scrubs are cute in a dr. office setting, but at a hospital, I guess I would expect some uniformity among staff.

Recently when my sister had her baby, the L&D nurses had scrub bottoms with a long-sleeved hospital-branded t-shirt on.

I went to college with a woman who became a nurse. She was probably the best looking woman I knew back in my college days - tall, slim, blue eyes, blonde hair down to her waist. I saw her in her starched white uniform a few times and all I wanted to do was tear it off. It had nothing to do with a nurse fetish. :o  :o

I think you made a typo.

Don't laugh but our hospital did a survey about this a while back and while the nurses in our hospital are allowed to wear the whites or colors, the patients said in the survey they preferred the colors that the nurses seemed more approachable. Most of our peds nurses in the ER wear the fun prints and it seems to be a nice distraction for kids! :D Our OR nurses come in dressed in street clothes and change into their scrubs in a sterile environment to prevent contamination!

Well this is certainly worth my 3000 post!

ACKKKKK!!!!!! :o Starched white uniforms and caps!!!!! :o Do you know how hard that cr*p was to keep clean? Much less not comfortable to wear? I had to wear that my first year back in 1979. I also find it intimidating to patients. The school nurse at the high where I work now wore whites and her cap. The kids were ROTAFLO daily. I wear regular clothes including heels and skirts. :D
I think it's more important for medical/nursing personnel to wear a name tag that's easy to read and clearly states what you are..... Scrubs are easier to wear and clean.

Don't EVEN get me started with caps! I stuck one on my head for my college graduation picture and for my pinning and capping ceremony. I do have my original one somewhere.....in a box.....I think.....

I'm not Nurse Cratchet thank you very much!

Scrubs are fine with me. But commuting in them is probably a bad idea.

Plus, they (if the employer allows it) allow the nurse to have a little individuality with different prints and such.
