Parking spot rant

Sorry I just need to vent. This is one of my biggest pet peeves.

I have no problem with handicap spots. Those people were born with or somehow acquired a disability. They deserve to park closer to stores. I have a HUGE issue with these "OBTLC" and "Family" spots.

Women CHOOSE to get pregnant and have kids, and because of that I have to park further away?????? I don't like baggage (literally, diaper bag, kids, etc). so guess what......I don't have kids!

If, by momentary insanity, I decided to have them, I would realize that everything in life would become harder because I'd be carrying 30some extra lbs when pregnant, then the kids and all their stuff after that. That's my choice. I'd be walking from the last spot in the lot into the store. I'm not going to put my issues on someone else.

sorry, just drives me nuts.

God forbid people walk an extra twenty feet or whatever out of courtesy.

Someone must be having a bad day.

I don't have kids, but I've got no problems with the parking spots.

I thank my lucky stars whenever I can walk across a lot without trouble and it's a good thing for me to get the exercise.

While I've never used the pregnant ones, I've had my share of using the "handicapped" ones due to my sista slip and fall problem. Having broken both a foot and an ankle, I know what a Godsend those places are...and I was glad that my need was only temporary.

Hopefully you will never need a spot for any reason (whether of your own free will or not)

Well, I do have a child and let me say for one that he is worth every bit of "extra baggage" I have had to carry around for him.

I use the family parking spots when they are available primarily for safety reasons. I don't mind hauling the diaper bag, etc. around--like you said, that's part of the job and I accept that (though now that he's 3 and potty trained, I have less stuff to haul)--but the less parking lot I have to walk across with him, the better, just from a safety standpoint. People drive around parking lots like maniacs sometimes so if we have to walk a shorter distance that means there's less of a chance that he'll dart away from me in front of a car (though he knows better, but kids are unpredictable at times) or trip and fall on the way to the store or something like that. So for me, it's an issue of safety, not one of convenience.

On behalf of those who have chosen to bear children, I apologize that you have had to walk an extra 20 feet at certain stores.

I use the family spots and car with child spots. I have also been known to move the "special needs" signs from their original spot next to all the unused handicapped spots to the far end of the parking lot. I also park in one of the handicapped spaces at my Starbucks when access to the back is blocked by the drivethru traffic. I did switch banks to one that put its handicapped spaces on the side of the building and left the "good" spaces for the healthy customers.

I park farther away because I could use the extra few steps and it keeps my car from becoming a victim of a door ding.

I have NO problem with the parking spots...i feel lucky that i have two good legs and i am able to use them!!! Now ask me about people expecting me to put up with their childrens bad behavior at a NICE restaurant.....that is another story!

wow... my only parking lot peeve, and it is a BIG peeve of mine is when people put all of their stuff away, and leave the shopping cart in the darned lot rather than putting it in the coralle where it belongs. So either the cart rolls, and hits someones car, potentially causing hundreds of dollars in damage, or the next person cant park there because someone else was too lazy to walk 10 feet to put the cart away.

I hate that

I can understand the parents with children spots from a safety perspective, although on Long Island I haven't seen any of those spots. My peeve is how carelessly they issue handicap parking permits. I have seen people jump out of their cars parked in handicap spots and dance into stores walking better then I do. I wish they would enforce that a little more. It seems to be a problem in NY.

here too.... and I make a point to give them a dirty look, and I make sure that the see me do it! That is just mean. Apparantly commom courtey is a thing of the past.

I agree...

AND if you were ever 9 months pregant already carrying a car seat and holding a toddler's hand, you would GREATLY appreciate the Stork Parking. (Not that I ever got to use them because that is a more recent thing!)

Does this mean that you would not stand up and offer a very pregnant woman your seat either? Come on...a little courtesy please.

This thread is the prime example of what has gone wrong in our country.

Try getting back in your car when you are nine months pregant when someone has parked so close you can't fit your big fat belly in...it's not like you can't get in the other door and jump over the seat!

The extra room and extra courtesy if very much appreciated.

And by the way, women DID NOT choose to be the childbearing part of the relationship. That was done long ago. And I believe men take part in pregnancy as well, at least that was what I was taught in 5th grade.

It's a problem in NC as well. I do agree that there are several people abusing the permits!

Life's to short to worry about stuff that doesn't really matter all that much....

If half the lot was reserved for family spots, there might be reason to squawk, but the 2 or 3 spots? Yikes......

My kids are older; the family parking spots weren't prevalent when mine were little, but I sure don't begrudge anyone using them now. Just a courtesy to the families around us. Not a big deal to walk an extra few feet.

Yep. And I get a chuckle when I pass someone waiting for a prime parking spot -- then I go to the end of the row, take my walk and am inside the store while they're still waiting for the other car to back out. Not only is it healthier, it's quicker, too.

So show your displeasure with your wallet. Don't patronize the stores that have those spots. Rather than moan and wail on a message board do something about it. That being said. When you get a list of the stores you will no longer be patronizing, post it here. That way I can go to those stores and purchase items there as a reward for their courtesy.
