Big 8--Standards Question

Post by rich_big »

how often does the Big 8 change? seems last night was all of the same big ones as last year. I know Drunk & Screw used to be an every nighter, but that seems to have been retired. is it often one of the standards gets added or one put on the shelf?

come on, old timers, tell us about the good old days

I really consider it closer to the Big 12
1. Margaritaville
2. Fins
3. Cheeseburger
4. Volcano
5. Come Monday
6. SOASOAS
7. CILCIA
8. One Particular Harbour
9. It's Five O'Clock
10. Brown Eyed Girl
11. Pirate Looks at Forty
12. Southern Cross-kinda sorta

Aside from Southern Cross, when was the last time was left off the setlists for a significant portion of the tour?

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I understand the Big 12 theory...because its dead on. However, he really, really, really, needs to ditch Brown Eyed Girl and more importantly Southern Cross. You could poll this entire forum, and I bet you that everyone would rather hear a tune like Tin Cup or Manana. I'm just not sure why he plays those particular covers so much. I've often heard him complain about having to play Margaritaville at every show, but that is obvious, its his anthem. But Brown Eyed Girl? Southern Cross? I'm on the bandwagon for eliminating covers aside from the Steve Goodwin sector.

I'll go the other direction. I enjoy both Brown Eyed Girl and Southern Cross. If he doesn't play them, it's not a deal-breaker, but I enjoy both of these songs in concert.

At Tinley last year I realized why he keeps playing them: Jimmy and the Band have fun with these songs on stage. With BEG, you get the extended bongo beat that is part of a JB concert.

If you listened to the Houston concert, the set list had standards, but it had variety and several songs that had not been played in years.

Just my opinion

Maybe I just don't have my ears to the ground, but I've NEVER heard Jimmy complain about "having to play Margaritaville at every show." In fact, I thought he thoroughly enjoyed it. He recognizes that, for better or worse, that one song has done more for him than all the others combined.

I seem to remember reading something a few years back (maybe it was on this site?) and shortly after 9/11 about Jimmy being given a tour of one of the NYC fire stations. A firefighter told Jimmy he was on his way to work a few days after the tragedy and heard "Margaritaville" playing on the radio. The firefighter said that was the first time he had smiled since 9/11. At that point, Jimmy said he would absolutely never get tired of performing that song.

I don't know if I have all of the facts straight, or even if the story is true or not, but I'm pretty sure Mr. Buffett doesn't mind playing The Parrothead Nation's National Anthem at every outing. :D

I love hearing Southern Cross at the shows. It's an upbeat, powerful anthem that everyone sings along with. Plus, it's got a wonderful, deep set of lyrics that appeal to me.

I was glad he dumped WDWGDAS and I was thrilled to hear Far Side of The World, and I nearly jumped out of my skin on hearing the extended USS Zydecoldsmobile played by Sonny L and later joined by Jimmy at the end. An absolute treat!

I was in line to get a chicken basket for my little girl when I saw Nadirah on the monitor singing Making Music for Money. I could tell that practically NO ONE else in line or down in the court below the stage even cared that they revived that one and gave it to Nadirah... but I was jumping for joy.

The only thing that would have made that show better was to have him conclude with Tin Cup Chalice.

HEY JIMMY...... WE ALL LOVE TIN CUP CHALICE! IF YOU PLAY IT WE'LL ALL JOIN HANDS AND WEEP WHILE WE SING! COME ON MAN!

Southern Cross is one of my favorite songs......and I love Jimmy's cover of that....I would be sad to see that one go.....

I could live without CIP and Five o'clock, though.

I miss the Big 8. It's just not the same without the annual Nebraska vs Oklahoma game.

I've seen Van Morrison do Brown Eyed Girl live. Jimmy should never sing that song again.

If he is doing covers, I would take Mexico (James Taylor) and Scarlet Begonnias (Greatful Dead) over Brown and Southern any day!!

In my pre-parrothead days, I remember the first time I heard Mexico by Jimmy. I was a die-hard James Taylor fan (I actually credit him with teaching me how to play guitar), and I heard the Buffett version on the radio. I changed the channel before it was over. :D

Now I love it. I still don't prefer it. But I love it.

Personally I cannot complain about anything Jimmy sings to me live at a concert. I can fire up my Ipod anytime I want to hear my favorites--Desperation Samba, Stars Fell on Alabama, Blue Heaven Rendezvous, et al. In the YOSH, I am more than glad to be able to get out the beads and the margarita mix and head over to a concert and listen to anything he wants to play for us. I am glad we are ALL still here, old phriends and new, and I will take me a little Jimmy anyway I can get him! [smilie=giggle.gif]

Kenny Chesney's all for keeping the Southern Cross in the Bible Belt. A nip here, tuck there. He does this religiously, night after night, for days on end.

i could take or leave BEG, southern cross i really do enjoy.

you're never going to get him to not play the Big 8.....It's just going to happen every night. It's what got him where he is.....Do you really think that everyone there is as die hard as most people on this board are. Face it, if he did a whole show without the Big 8, the show would be much more mellow....i would love to see it and so would you, but 75% wouldn't, so thats why he's always going to try and mix it up. Honestly i think he's done a pretty good job at mixing it up lately.
Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way

I really like Southern Cross a lot. One of my favorites of Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. I like Scarlet Begonia a lot too. Mexico is OK. Brown Eyed Girl not so much.

Anyone think Buffett may just enjoy playing those songs live? Might be fun for him to mix in some other stuff. I mean I'd rather have Tin Cup Chalice too (and that should be a staple) but I've got no problem with him covering a few tunes here and there.
