Own or Rent?

I have a small place, but I have been here 5 years..
and even with regular vacuming the Carpet needs some love..
I know it's gonna take three or four cleanings..
also I have no place to move the Desk,Couch ETC...
so I will have to clean.. let dry .. Move.. Clean.. Let dry..
at $25 per rental.. and a strict 24 hour time frame
I see at least $100 for rental fees..
I can buy a mid-range one for about $140

any Opinions????

How often do you plan on doing it? That'd be my first question. Do you have the space to keep it? What kind of product are you getting for $140? Is it one of comparable quality and performance as the rental one? How much of a hassle is it to go and pick up the rental? Is there a cost for maintanance and cleaning solutions for the one you own? And most importantly...

Will you come clean mine when you're done?

Not too long ago I had a Kirby, Wayne.. did a great job at vacuuming AND shampooing. I didn't like it only cause it was an upright and heavy and I prefer canisters, but it did a good job. :)

Three family members went in and bought a cleaner together. We each use it once or twice a year. We did the same with a power washer.

To be honest?? the Cleaning solutions are a wash..
amd the pick up and return would be a bear.. :-?
also the Rental still keeps a log with DL info and CC info
right out there on the floor.. I'm not really in love with that...
also to be Honest??

when it's done I either park it at Mom and Dads.. or
it hits the Goodwill...

the way I see it i am out the money anyway..
I am just thinking that for the time I use it I
have it when I want.. It's not gotta go get it..
NOW go to work on the carpet..

Stanley Steamer! :D

Actually, mine needs it too. Last time it was done, I said yes to the free Kirby home demonstration! I knew I wasn't buying, but the poor girl came in and cleaned my carpets for free! I still feel a little bad about it!

Kirby guilt... did you confess to pope jimmy about it?

Seriously, Stanley Steemer is the way to go. Put all your stuff into one or two rooms, and make two separate appointments. Shuffle your stuff and you're good to go.

Funny Wayne. Real funny.

Sounds like you should just pick one up, and that way you have it when you need it.

With two dogs in the house, the steam carpet cleaners are MANDATORY.
We have a Bissel, which does a really good job, but, since I like cleaning my carpets about as much as I like mowing my G.D.M.F. jungle (a.k.a. my lawn), every so often I'll call the carpet cleaners to send someone out.
They have a flat rate (depending on how many rooms I have them clean), but if they do a really good job (which is the case more often than not), I don't mind overtipping them a little.

I'm with you, brother. I have a Bissel, that works OK, but for a real cleaning from corner to corner I call the pros. There is a company out here (Maryland) called Chem-Dri that uses about 1/3 the water that most carpet cleaner companies use. The carpets dry faster and old stains don't pop back up as fast. (You know they do - nasty little buggers in the padding! )

If you carpet is really gross, I'd start with a professional cleaning, then try keeping it up with your home cleaner. If you bought one you could donate it to a community center or senior citizens group when you're done...they might even let you borrow it back if you needed it again.

I had a Kirby, but wanted something that was easier to use. Now I've got a Bissell and it works great.

If it is a rental apartment, Wayne , ask your landlord or janitor to have
your carpets cleaned. Once in 5 years is not excessive! Normal maintance!
They should want to come in and do that anyway. Or ask for new carpet.

Like Garry said, I would go with the professional cleaning. They do a
really good job, often times getting out stains and things you just can't.

Also, if you only have to do it every few years, like 5, why spend the
money to own it? Besides it can be really hard work, especially having to
move all the furniture around!

I think I'd just move into a new place.

I've got a kirby and like the results. You could always request a kirby demo and get your carpets cleaned for free as long as you can handle the sales pitch.

We have our carpets cleaned by some self-employed guy. He does a heck of a job getting stuff out of them.

He even moves the furniture.

Well worth the price he charges, for me not to have to deal with one of those machines myself.

Well.. To be honest.. I should do it more often..
I have been on a "I need to move next??" for the last three years.

the Pros sound good.. BUT.. I really have no place to put the couch..
I need to clean around it.. let the carpet dry.. and then move the couch to the dry spot to clean..
same goes with most of the other stuff.. I won't even bother with the
entermainment center..

I have a hoover from walmart I love it. Probably a little to much like 3 of my friends have bought them because of me. If you look up there reviews online they have the best ones. Just make sure you check the reviews before you buy if you decide to go that way my friend bought 3 that sucked before she got the one like me. Pro's normally charge in one visit what your gonna pay for your own. You also don't have to move the couch they just put styrofoam under the legs till the carpet dries. It does take forever to do it yourself I spend 4 plus hrs per room and I have small rooms. The water/holding tanks just aren't that big.
