HOTELS

Okay, here's the deal:

Yes, hotel rates are always this high in the summer in Newport, and that much worse during Folk Fest and Jazz Fest. Anything in downtown Newport is going to be astronomical and anything on the island will be bad (Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth (one little motel)). It's rare that there are special rates available (government, AAA, AARP, corporate, etc).

The first weekend of the month is reserve drill weekend and that eats up a whole bunch of hotel rooms, too.

BUT THIS IS A SMALL STATE! You can stay in Fall River, MA; Narragansett, RI; Wakefield, RI; North or South Kingstown, RI; and even as far away as Warwick, RI or Providence, RI and only be a 1/2 hour away.

The only two places I would advise against are the Motel 6 (across the street from the water treatment plant; the odor is *gagging* in August) and the Pineapple Inn (sketchy).

There's a campground in Portsmouth: Melville Ponds Campground.

Planes, trains, automobiles and ferries

Fly into Providence (PVD) if you can. It's closer and way easier to get in and out of than Boston.

If Boston (BOS) is cheaper it's only about an hour away.

Hartford (BDL) is about 2 hours away.

Manchester NH (MHT) is two hours but only in the very early morning (before about 6:00AM) or evening/night (after about 7:00PM). You have to get past Boston and that can add two hours to the transit time.

Southwest flies into both PVD and MHT.

Don't fly into the New York area and try to drive. You'll be ready to slit your wrists while you sit for hours and hours and hours on I-95 in CT.

If you're driving from Long Island or even points west of there (NJ, for instance) you might want to consider the Point Orient (Orient Point?) to New London Cross Sound Ferry. I think it's about $60 for car and driver and about $10-15 per extra passenger, one way. You need reservations. Worth every penny to avoid I-95 during high traffic times.

Is this a kid frendly event? I was planning to go with my wife and 2 kids (6and5) and we would fly into Newport coming from Long Island.

I might drive up to my sister's house in Connecticut Saturday and stay there so it won't be such a long day Sunday. I'll have to see how things go between now and August.

Yes, it is. And kids' tickets are cheaper than adult tickets.
