Official Song of Key West

Post by southernmost »

According to this Key West blog, Key West is about to name an "official song"...and it isn't by Jimmy Buffett!

It sounds like a commercial for Key West. The name checking they did in the video sounded like made up people, and they keep showing the same eight people over and over. Sounds like a brilliant marketing ploy for the artist.

Welcome to Buffettnews, southernmost.

James Slater sounds like a pretty good guy. Kind of reminds me of Mark Mulligan or Kelly McGuire.

I like his style and the Key West song is a good promo song, rather than something like I Have Found Me A Home or Blue Heaven Rendezvous, or Nautical Wheelers, or even Margaritaville. I can't think of a Buffett song that would be a better Key West Song.

I voted yes, although, that was just because I like the song. Maybe it isn't fair for the mayor to just pick a song. There should be some voting process, huh?

Maybe a Michael McCloud song would be a more typical Key West artist to get recognition for writing a Key West song. He has some good ones and certainly has made it his home.

Sounds like James Slater's forte is writing about places and towns.

There was a song someone put on a mixed tape (I'm dating myself here) for me a long time ago that was about Key West. It was something about the Conch (or Conga?) Republic and he mentions cutting his jeans because it was too hot.

Does anyone have any clue what song I'm talking about?? I need to find it again.

I think the Official song of Key West should be Christmas in Key West by Scott Kirby, from the CD 4 Good Dogs

Talk about dating oneself!
I bought a 45 rpm single from a Mallory Square singer/songwriter back in '74 titled "Life is a Breeze in the Florida Keys".

It was kinda catchy, with lines like:
"Garrison Bight, a pirate's delight,
That's where I'm gonna meet my baby tonight"

The flip-side was really lame by comparison.

He had hitched to Miami to make the recording, and was the first "vender"
I ever saw at sunset, as opposed to a conventional busker.
He sang for free, with no tip jar or hat, and then sold the 45's after he was done.

Wish I could find it!

Well, I *could* hope that they might have chosen my "Key West Habit" (you can hear the whole song on my MySpace page - http://www.myspace.com/lorendavidson). But if they won't do that, I'd vote for Michael McCloud doing "Just Came Down for the Weekend," which I gather he co-wrote with the late Shel Silverstein.

I'm told the tune I'm looking for is 'Living in the Conch Republic' by Michael McCloud. Anyone have it? Or is it available on iTunes. I'm having trouble finding any reference to it.
