God's Own Drunk..

Post by f2cdlzrd »

At work today after a great show last night in Charlotte. I was so excited to see 'God's Own Drunk' performed live. My 2-part question: before last night, when was the last time Jimmy performed 'God's Own Drunk' live and 2) when was the last time he performed the song in North Carolina? Your answers are much appreciated as I will use the facts at our next Parrothead meeting. Thanks again.

Looking back over the whole list, there are two extended periods where he didn't play this at all, between 1982 and 1988 and again from 2000 to 2007. IIRC, that first period was during the dispute with the Buckley heirs. Am I remembering correctly that there was some sort of injunction against Jimmy playing that? That led to the song The Lawyer & The a**hole judging from the lyrics.

Any ideas why he stopped the second time? Just burned out on it?

How was the crowd during this? I do like this "song" but I'd prefer to listen to it on a CD. I 'm really hoping he does not play it at the show I attend. It's just too long and not even really a song. I'd prefer something a little more high energy for an encore. But if he does play it, I'll still sing along. :D

I was there and I was on the lawn. I was SO freakin' excited when he played this........but the idiots around us were talking the whole time and I saw a lot of people getting up to leave......so in the area where I was the crowd was really not that into it. But I think being where I was (on the lawn) there were probably a lot of people around us that weren't familiar with it. And like you said, it's not really a "song" that you can sing and dance to.

It did look like the people up front in the reserved seats were really enjoying it, though. I just think I was not sitting in the best area for it.

I was happy he played it.........it's not something that's normally in the setlist, so it was a nice surprise to end the evening! 8)

Generally the people in the reserved seats enjoyed the "song" I think that many realized the rarity of it. (He had rehearsed with Coast of Carolina during the sound check, so I was expecting that at some point during the encore)

It was really strange that he played without an intermission. He did that at Charlotte two years ago during the soaking rain we had, but that was more for the fans. Creola and My Guitar Gently Weeps took the place of intermission.

I thought it was odd, too, but I'm glad it was that way--I loved those performances! I love hearing Nadira and Jake just blows me away with what he can do on that uke! (though I missed part of Creola b/c I ran off for a potty break.....)

Oddly enough, this song was played on XM radio this past Saturday. My XM receiver beeped to tell me a Buffett song was starting, and I was shocked when I saw which song.

So I tuned in, and it was on the music/talk combo station they have specifically to cater toward truckers. However, they yanked the song after about 2 minutes due to the profanity and the DJ apologized for not screening the song ahead of time, as it was a request, but they can't have such language as they do have younger listeners.

Now I am very bummed that I picked last night to do other things around the house and deciding not to listen to the show. I hope he does God's Own Drunk at one or more of the shows that I go to this summer. Yes, it is long, and no, you can't dance to it, but it is a Buffett classic that I love.

Got it admit, the few times I've listened to the recording of "God's Own Drunk" I find it amusing, but probably not a "song" I'd personally like to hear done live at a concert...... :o

However, I can appreciate its rarity and the fact that other PH do enjoy it.

Can someone give a brief history (or a previous link?) of Lord Buckley's original and JB's version? How did it come to be?

Thanks in advance....... :pirate:

I have to admit that as soon as I heard it I kinda tuned out. I would have been very disappointed to be at a show that ended with that "song." It was mildly amusing the first time I heard it but I really don't find it interesting nor amusing to hear it anymore.

I love the ballads that usually end the shows and God's Own Drunk does not do anything for me. :-?

That said, it is a favorite of some others....so who am I to begrudge them their amusement.....

I have to admit, not a huge fan of gods own drunk (ducking)....CD maybe, live i think there's alot better choices he can close with....he was obviously trying to mix it up which i love, but just wasn't thrilled with it last night as the closer.
Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way

i would give up body parts for god's own drunk. i have only been lucky enough to get it once in 32 shows, and that was one of my first shows ever.

PLEASE JIMMY...ATLANTA, CINCY, ALPINE OR INDY....PLEASE!!!!!!!!

by the way...i take total credit for the north carolina sighting of this classic. i'm sure jimmy saw me on the big screen during the st. louis show with "the shirt" on and thought..."ya know, i'm goning to break it out next week."

WHY NOT ST. LOUIS??????

ok - can't say this song makes my top 10 BUT I would not trade this for anything.

I agree with previous posts - lots of people didn't "get it" and started to leave BUT it was a great way to end the show. You couldn't help get pulled into the story and have blast watching how much fun Jimmy was having....love the facial expressions........

check this out....
