NOLA
We are heading to NOLA over Memorial Day weekend. A quick getaway without the keets. I haven't been there since '99. What are the must see and do and good places to eat? I know I'll find the good places to drink.

I dig the fried chicken at Fiorellos, the Shrimp Creole at Coop's, the muffaletta from Central Grocery. We also had a nice lunch at Tujagues! Mr. B's bistro was good too and we had a delicious dinner at Emeril's. I'm hungry....
Oh and get a frozen Irish coffee from Molly's at the Market! Have fun!

I 2nd Bon Ton Cafe! My guilty pleasures for dining in the Crescent City are Cafe Du Monde and I do enjoy Emeril's place, NOLA. If you are there on a Friday night, go to the Dragons Den and have a beer in a dive of a bar and watch some of the most amazing belly dancing performed by members of Nomadic Tribal. The bar downstairs features some good bar bands that you won't see/hear anywhere else. Of course, sometimes there is a reason you won't want to see or hear them..anywhere!
And the ultimate in guilty shopping pleasure is a quick visit to the French Market. When we were there in January the end closest to the US Mint was still being rebuilt but there were all sorts of fun merchants by Margaritaville.

of course this post is a little too late but i saw you went to Mothers. they have the greatest Turtle Soup. Heading down there for Halloween for my 3rd trip and that will be on the agenda no doubt. I hear tourism doubled last year so i hope this year it will be closer to my pre katrina trip, not like the one in '06 which was still fun but nothing like the first time. as of last check you could get a package deal of 3 nights and flight for 3 people for about $450 on the edge of the Quarter like the Holiday Inn on Royal i believe and then up from there. i am sure it will be higher by the time we book

We were in NOLA for 3 or 4 nights and walked there each morning for breakfast, and also to get cafe au laits later on in the day. No shame in multiple beignet stopsMon wrote:Embarrased to say, but went there MORE THAN ONCE on our short 3 day visit.Dutch Harbor PH wrote:Ahhh Mon Amiee.....Bineits a' cafe du monde.....![]()

Moving our trip up to the end of September...checked the Hurricane history and it looks like the later you get into September, the chance for one really diminishes.(fingers crossed) i suggest anyone going to NO logs onto neworleansonline.com to look for plane and hotel packages. Maybe because its hurricane season but 4 people from pgh to NO can stay Thursday thru Saturday night at the Holiday in on Royal for $288!!!! Deeper in the quarter is $350. cant beat it!! thats a lot of Hand Grenades i can afford now although after the first few, how many more does one need?

The waitress there made us so mad we went to Cafe Beignet across the street! The place was packed, and the little idiot waitress grabbed a chair behind a post and sat down with a magazine! I don't care if she was on a break, you absolutely, positively do not do that on the restaurant floor- especially when there are 4 tables really close by waiting on service. She had the nastiest look on her face when a customer asked her for help. The people at Cafe Beignet were cool though, and they have better beignets.lilsalty wrote:We were in NOLA for 3 or 4 nights and walked there each morning for breakfast, and also to get cafe au laits later on in the day. If you're looking for a really nice dinner, we loooved MILA, and it was relatively cheap for the quality of the food. We're pretty sure we spent less there than Commander's Palace (which was also great- the bread pudding souffle was just about a religious experience). MILA is less traditional NOLA fare, but it was excellent. It's in the Sheraton, I think- it's off Dauphine a street or two up from Canal.
Acme's always good, but I could eat my own weight in oysters.
Avoid Galatoire's- we spent $100 on an appetizer, two entrees, and a drink (that wasn't even what Tom wanted). They tasted like they came out of the kitchen of a nursing home. It was some of the worst food I've ever had, definitely the worst expensive meal by far, and one of the worst atmospheres- bad food, the service would have been fine at Applebee's, but not somewhere with those prices with jackets required, and it was loud- no music, just that much crowd noise.
Also, Oceana off Bourbon (I think on Conti) was bad. I've made better red beans from a microwaved bag of Zatarains, and it was expensive.
Mondrel's down by the French Market area was really good! It's traditional New Orleans food. We decided to stop for a nibble, but it was right as the kitchen was turning over, and I think the chef was late or something. Duffy, our waitress, was bound and determined to make sure we couldn't walk when we left. It started with- here, try some crawfish. Eat the bread. We're taking forever, here, have some crawfish bisque and more bread. It took well over an hour, but it was a good people watching spot, she was fun, we had nowhere to be, and the food tasted like it came out of a Creole Grandma's kitchen. It was good.
