The next time your dentist says you need a crown to top-off a root canal, ask where that crown will be made. If it's not made in the United States, it could be tainted with lead.
Chris Pouncey is sitting in his New York dentist's office, but something that occurred thousands of miles away may affect him and millions of other dental patients. An Ohio woman is suing her dentist for a lead-tainted bridge made in China. "I'm not shocked to hear about it to be frank, but it's a little troubling," Pouncey said. "I was anticipating something like that may come up in the future, because we've had problems with the toys and everything like that, so I was a little surprised that it came as fast as it did," said dental lab owner Willie Lezaja. At Lezaja's lab in Manhattan, they make the crowns, bridges and implants for dentists. But lower cost foreign work is attractive to a many other labs. The American Dental Association and FDA are investigating. "In other words if I were to send to one of these labs that might outsource to a country like China or to Europe, I would expect the work comes back with the materials used written directly on the case. Right now that's not required by law," said Dr.Robert Raiber, dentist. Millions of dental patients may be wondering what to ask about future treatments and questioning work already done. "I've had this is my mouth for 15 years, I hate to think about it, but I guess at this point in time there's not much I can do about it," said Pouncey. Crowns and other dental implants made in the U.S. are required by the FDA to be lead free, so if you're concerned, as your dentist where the lab he or she uses is located and whether it outsources overseas.
