Lost to History.........

A piece of Pacific Northwest Rock n Roll history was lost this morning when the Firwood Tavern in Fife burned to the ground. One of the few places left in Western Washington where you could go to hear some great music for a small covercharge, the Firwood Tavern was a large part of a small town. Set in the country surounded by farmland it was a great place to hear northwest icons like Jr. Cadilac and the Great Pretenders. It will be missed.
FIFE — A fire that broke out about 5 a.m. has destroyed the Firwood Tavern in Fife.

The roof and walls have collapsed, leaving only embers and twisted metal.

The fire took off so quickly this morning that firefighters had to stay outside and attack the flames from defensive positions. They also depended on water tankers because of a lack of hydrants in the area.

There are no reports of injuries and no word yet on the cause.
Not much of an article for such a grand old dive. :(

By my recollection this may have been the last of the great old Taverns in Western Washington. Others that I recall have been gone awhile now. The Aquarious Tavern is now a mini casino, the Fabulous Rainbow? gone. Montanas? gone. Baldy's is now a daycare center which is perfect if you think about it as they always did take care of children there.

Only one other that I can remember may still be in operation. That would be the Greenwood Tavern in North Seattle.

I know I'm missing a few of the other Rock n Roll taverns that have long since disappeared.

Sail on Firwood.

My family owns a cabin on it. My Grandfather built it in 1937. It was one of the first ones there. It's about the only true log cabin still standing on the lake front. (My Mom helped strip the logs when she was a kid.) If you're ever on the lake, it's in Little Hoquiam Cove on the point in the middle of the cove. It's pretty cool.

And the ultimte tragedy.... The "Elbow Room" in Dutch Harbor is gone :( :( :(

For years and years it was named in the Playboy Magazine "Roughest Bars in Amerca" Survey in the top three.......In recent years it was actually fairly tame in the elbow room and the owner finally sold the bar to a pair of locals who opted to Not pay for the name...as such it was renamed "Lattitudes" (though the "Elbow Romm" sign still hung inside by the stage.....).....just last year one of the large fish processing companies (Who ownes the only competing bars) bought it and shut it down.....A lot of memeories in there ...Wow..... Famous watering holes of the Aleutians.... :( :(
