Paul Shaffer was lost!

Post by rpnuge »

What the hell was up with Paul Shaffer playing the keyboards behind Jimmy? He had the sheet music out and looked like he was playing in a band for the first time. He played like 5 seconds. The camera kept going to him expecting to show him playing but he was totally out of it.

Maybe it's because in spite of all the work we do, it's the child in us we really value.

It's the house band...they don't rehearse much with the guest, their good enough musicians they're reading the music for the first time. Studio musicians do the same thing.

They're good enough to play music as they read, but it seems like Paul wasn't prepared enough when Jimmy called out "Mr. Shaffer", although I really couldn't make out his part well.

sounds like he only got the first three notes of volcano lick (homer voice..mmmmm, volcano lick)

makes me love Mr Utley even more.

plus JB didnt give us the "I think some people in this crowd got high" followed by a big cheer from the audience...

Just watched the video ... I'll bet Jimmy was *really* wishing for Mr. Utley ... that was just awful ... the guy with the flute missed several cues, too ... egads! :o

He probably could have just run his finger up and down the keyboard like Mr. Utley does in the beginning of Volcano and it would've sounded a lot better and made him appear like he knew what he was doing.

Poor guy...hardly played any notes!

Do you think that the band had NO IDEA what they were going to play until just then? Wouldn't they have had a little time to prepare?

Of course there are. Hell, I've got one or two books with the sheet music for "Volcano." And there are tabs out there on the Web.

Then again, it's only a three-chord song, so it's not all *that* hard to figure out.

Everyone's a critic. Sounded great too me and I'm glad Jimmy controlled his voice and sometimes corny ad libs for tv.
And sure Paul looks like a dork but he played fine.
