This weekend the RR Crossing nearest to my place was down when I got to it. It had been down for a while according to the young lady who was ahead of me and turned around. So I turned around and went down to then next crossing about a mile away, when I got to the tracks I slowed and looked down them and it was still down. After running my errands (about 20 min) the dang thing was still down and no repair crew in site.
Sunday I didn't even bother going that way the first time.

I stop at ALL crossings.......
We have a VERY active train that comes through hourly sometimes semi-hourly just off base.... a matter of fact as I type I just heard the horn....
I'm not chancing my life with that train!
We have a couple of train tracks in my hometown..... in certain spots... you can't see the train unless its right next to the crossing!
*** Majority of people have cell phones plugged into their head... if they get caught by the train... how hard is it to dial up w*rk and say you are going to be late????

The Long Island Railroad has a service you can sign up for where they send you emails if there are problems with the trains. When I got to the office this morning, this was in my inbox, it was sent at 4:37am:
Service on the Long Beach Branch remains suspended between Lynbrook and Long Beach because of a train striking an unauthorized person on the tracks at Lynbrook.
The tracks at the Lynbrook station are elevated. Let's see - elevated tracks, "unauthorized person", 4:37am. I wonder if alcohol was involved?
