My ex BIL was riding in the country and crossed tracks that did not have lights or crossing arms. Unfortunately he didn't LOOK and now he's dead.

We have several RR crossings close to our house and I never go around before/after the gates are lowering. Not because I usually have the kids in the car with me, but because it's just stupid.

Most of the crossings in my area don't even have gates, they've just put in about 4 throughout town, but I will always stop.

I even will stop at the un-gated ones, to make sure a train's not coming...

There are two that I'll go around- only because the local kids have figured out how to trigger the arms, and do so on a regular basis. Both are in places where you can see a loooong way in either direction.

This weekend the RR Crossing nearest to my place was down when I got to it. It had been down for a while according to the young lady who was ahead of me and turned around. So I turned around and went down to then next crossing about a mile away, when I got to the tracks I slowed and looked down them and it was still down. After running my errands (about 20 min) the dang thing was still down and no repair crew in site. :o

Sunday I didn't even bother going that way the first time.

I stop at ALL crossings.......

We have a VERY active train that comes through hourly sometimes semi-hourly just off base.... a matter of fact as I type I just heard the horn....

I'm not chancing my life with that train!

We have a couple of train tracks in my hometown..... in certain spots... you can't see the train unless its right next to the crossing!

*** Majority of people have cell phones plugged into their head... if they get caught by the train... how hard is it to dial up w*rk and say you are going to be late????

I always stop.

If they are stuck, I will proceed with caution after a few minutes.

The Long Island Railroad has a service you can sign up for where they send you emails if there are problems with the trains. When I got to the office this morning, this was in my inbox, it was sent at 4:37am:
Service on the Long Beach Branch remains suspended between Lynbrook and Long Beach because of a train striking an unauthorized person on the tracks at Lynbrook.

The tracks at the Lynbrook station are elevated. Let's see - elevated tracks, "unauthorized person", 4:37am. I wonder if alcohol was involved?
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

Stopping on and lying on the tracks got to be a morbid fad in the SD's North County recently.
The Amtrak train comes blasting by at about 80 mph, and copycat suicide is just a sad fact sometimes.

Yeah, the law of "gross tonnage" takes over here.
I would never even consider trying to run it.
