I would love to start working 4 ten-hour days. And that has nothing to do with gas prices, as I'd probably spend that extra day off driving somewhere

I used to work 4 ten hour days. There were some good things about it and some bad things about it.

We do 10-hour days in the summer at my office and I LOVE it. That extra DAY available for home/personal is way better and more useful than the extra hour required at the start and end of a typical 8-hour day.

Year ago in my office, I asked for the same schedule that a coworker had been doing for years. He was working "9 hour days" which allowed him to take every other Friday off. I figured since the rest of us were working 9 and 10 hour days minimum and 5 days/week that I'd like to have the same perk of getting 26 extra 3 day weekends every year as well. Heck we were management salaried employees anyway ..... you work to get the job done, it's not based on a clock anyway. The rest of us were covering for him every other Friday as it was.
I was told by HR that they could no longer honor that particular work arrangement and that they were in fact unaware that he was still doing it. They revoked his arrangement.
He somehow thought this was my fault.

Our HR group is doing this, at least for the summer, on a voluntary basis. The theory is that we can save gas used for travelling to and from work.
They are also beefing up our ability to telecommute for the same reason.

One of the banks I worked for in my pre-law school days tried this in the auto finance division. Everybody worked four 10 hour days - half the department was off Thursday, the other half was off Friday and they switched every week so you would have a 3 day weekend every other week. The problem was my boss decided the schedule didn't apply to him so I wound up working five 10 hour days every week. Finally I told him it would be nice if he stayed late on an occasional Friday because I liked to get laid once in a while.

I began working 4/10s and love Friday's off. It's great because I save money on gas and my commute is shorter in time, plus I don't use as much vacation time and can save it for fall.

I just hope they let me continue after summer semester.

He didn't comply so you said, "Screw it, I'm gonna be a lawyer instead!" ?

No, I stayed for a couple of months then left and went to another bank. It was about 2 or 3 years before I went to law school.

I already work at home two days a week. That's not a bad arrangement, and I *definitely* don't miss the traffic.

I used to work one 12 and two 14 hour shifts a week and I would do it again if I could. We were a 7 day a week operation and I would work the 12 hour shift on Friday and the 14 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. We found that there huge gains in employee morale, fewer extended lunches so people could go deal with businesses that were only open from 8 to 5 M-F, fewer sick days used and no change in productivity, either positively or negatively, other than those associated with fewer sick days. I would love to go back to either 3 or 4 days and having at least 3 days a week off.
As for the claims that costs go up significantly, I have a hard time believing that unless there is some other change or no one is turning off the lights, etc. when they leave. If no one is in the office for 3 days, the costs for lights, heat, etc. should remain constant or nearly so because you are cutting out an entire day. Now if you have some folks coming in Monday through Thursday and others coming in Tuesday through Friday, then you will have an increase in expenses.
This is one of the few things that Gov. Jon Huntsman has done that I wholeheartedly support.
