Anyway I digress, any methods of discouraging nightly visits other than the shotgun variety. Is there a scent, some type of scareskunk (thats a play on scarecrow) or anything else that might work. The last skunk was removed by the front tire of a vehicle while he was crossing the road. The only thing worse than nightly skunk smell is a week of dead skunk on the road smell in August.

SKUNK!
So I let the boys out last night for their evening "watering of the grass" and whats walking across the yard but a skunk. Fortunately I was able to wake up the neighbors and get the dogs in before they realized there was a chasin' thing in the yard. Last time they chased, the skunk turned around and defended. Of course instead of being bothered by the stream, they continued to check out the friendly skunk and get blasted a few more times.

From a wild experience I had in trying to capture a feral cat,
I learned that skunks are easily lured by bait... old fish, cat food, food trash, etc...
You could go to the local humane society, rent a cat trap and catch the little SOB
If you can handle one last spraying,
I hauled my intrusive skunk out of town (5 mi.) and unloaded him near some dumpsters by a foothills mall, where there were other skunks to hang with

I grew up in rural central Jersey. (Yes, Larry, it does exist)
Before my parents built our house, there was an apple orchard there.
When the apple orchard was there, so were the wild animals. (deer, skunk, fox...etc)
When the houses were built, the animals kinda game the homeowners a "screw-you, we were here first, we ain't going anywhere" attitude.
The neighborhood just learned to live with it.
The dogs learned their lesson, eventually and left the skunk alone. The foxes ate the deer and a few dogs. Natural order if you ask me.

grizzly bear eh? I'm liking that idea. Might keep the Jehovah witnesses away too.The Lost Manatee wrote:My friend who lives outside of West Yellowstone swears that putting a grizzly bear in your yard will discourage all sorts of pesky critters and having one in your front yard keeps the door to door salesman away.

Just one? I had seven of the thngs on my deck last night. The cats just sit out there with them. My kids walk out there with them. The only thing that bothers them is when the giant raccoon shows up.... I live in a zoo......

I'd be afraid of rabies with the skunks around - well unless the boys have named them
There is a HUGE king kong of raccoons around my office. I've seen it twice. There's a dentist across the street that feeds a cat outdoors. That coon chases the poor cat and eats it's food
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

Oh, wait, and I forgot about the squirrels who come sit at the door and demand to be fed because they're used to being hand-fed peanuts all winter.... One day I arrived home to find the squirrels being fed IN MY DEN.........ph4ever wrote:I'd be afraid of rabies with the skunks around - well unless the boys have named themSchoolGirlHeart wrote:Just one? Coyote urine works to keep raccoons away (for people with koi ponds) and can be purchased online. Not sure about skunks. I'm sure the coyote urine online store will have info on it if it works.
Funny, you'd think after getting sprayed once, your dogs would have learned. The smell must not be offensive to them.

I've got a friend that didn't have luck with coyote urine. He eventually installed a motion detector on his sprinkler system and it does the trick!!Salukulady wrote:Coyote urine works to keep raccoons away (for people with koi ponds) and can be purchased online.
