Vol Report Card.......

Rushing offense
Tennessee found success running the football as Montario Hardesty and Arian Foster combined for 162 yards on 25 carries, averaging more than 6 yards a carry. The problem is that they only had their number called 25 times compared to 47 passing attempts. The other problem is that Arian Foster laid it on the ground inside the 5-yard line where it looked like he had a lane to the right to the outside and could get into the end zone. Tennessee only had 4 minus-yard runs with the tailback, but three of the four came inside the UCLA 35-yard line. All of that being said, Tennessee was effective running the football; they just didn't run it enough as evidenced by the tailbacks only getting seven touches after their first offensive series of the second half.

Grade: B **For as good as they were at times, you just can't fumble the football inside the 5-yard line.

Passing game
When your quarterback completes less than 50 percent of his passes, and he gets knocked down repeatedly, you are not going to have a good day throwing the football, and Tennessee didn't. Crompton was just 19 of 41 for 189 yards and an interception. At one point Crompton missed 8 passes in a row. Crompton did hit 5 in a row over the last two drives in regulation to get the Vols the lead and then to get it to overtime, but he was not nearly consistent enough. The offensive line was not consistent enough in pass protection and maybe the scariest notion is that the Tennessee receivers could not beat UCLA's cornerbacks one on one on the outside. The Bruin defense dared Tennessee to throw it down the field and outside of a deep ball to Josh Briscoe and Lucas Taylor, the offense could not convert nearly enough to win in the passing game.

Grade: D **Crompton's two drives to end regulation are what kept this from being worse.

Rushing defense
When you hold your opponent to less than a yard average rushing, then you were pretty special stopping the run. If you take out the lone sack of quarterback Kevin Craft, the numbers are still spectacular. The Bruins running backs had 30 yards on 26 carries (yes, their tailbacks had more carries than Tennessee's backs) and their long run was just 7 yards. With a makeshift offensive front and with their starting tailback hurt, it's hard to tell how good the Vol defense will truly be this year against the run, but Monday night they were terrific and certainly made UCLA a one-dimensional team.

Grade: A

Passing defenseWhat a tale of two halves. In the first two quarters, the Vol pass defense was spectacular with four interceptions and Bruin quarterback Kevin Craft had just seven completions for 66 yards. But the second half was a completely different story. Norm Chow took Tennessee's secondary out of the game and slowed down the Vol defensive front by going to a three step passing game and picking on Tennessee's linebackers in coverage. The Vols had no answers. Craft was 18 of 22 for 193 yards and a touchdown. At one point, Craft hit 8 in a row and 11 of 12. On UCLA's go-ahead touchdown drive, Craft was 6 of 6 for 70 yards on the drive including a key third-and-9 completion as the Vols could not get off the field. For as good as the pass defense was in the first half, they simply had no answers to Chow's quick game in the second half.

Grade: C **That's a first-half A and a second-half F

Special teams
It was like groundhog day as just like a year ago, the Vols special teams was their undoing. For the first time in the Phillip Fulmer era a team blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. It was poorly protected. In fact it wasn't protected at all and the wind-up for Cunningham's boot took too long. It was simply way too late. Dennis Rogan was fortunate to recover a punt he tried to field on a hop after the coaching staff had him lined up too deep all evening. Gerald Jones certainly showed that he can make plenty of things happen in the return game. But when you have a punt blocked for a score, average less than 30 yards a punt and you miss three field goals, including a game-tying 34-yard attempt in overtime, you had a bad day on special teams and you certainly negated the 47-yard, game-tying boot by Daniel Lincoln.

Grade: D **Jones' return work saved this from being worse.

Coaching
I am baffled by Fulmer's postgame radio comment calling the season opener a trap game. Yes, UCLA was going to be ready to play and emotionally jacked up to start the Rick Neuheisel era. But it's the season opener, coach. Your team should be emotionally ready to play. I can't see any scenario where this was a trap game. Tennessee has as many unknowns for the Bruins to prepare for as the Vols did. And yes, Tennessee had more to lose than UCLA, but I didn't see it as a trap game. It was a game where the Vols got outcoached. Offensively, they asked their quarterback to do too much and didn't do enough of what was working and that was lining up in the 'I' formation and running the football. There is no reason when you average 6-plus yards a carry that your ratio of pass to run should be nearly 2-to-1. Defensively, for as great as they were in the first half, the coaching staff had no adjustments or answers to the Bruins offense in the second half.

Grade: F

The question now is where does this team go from here. A year ago, they obviously responded well and won a lot of close games down the stretch to get to Atlanta. With a week off before UAB, then the start of a murderous stretch in the SEC, this staff has to make the right adjustments on offense now. They have to fix their struggles in other teams' territory. In the spring they didn't finish drives. In the fall, they didn't finish drives with scores and three of the five times they were inside the UCLA 35-yard line, they came away with no points with two missed field goals and a fumble. And they must get better on special teams.

Looks like the ECU-WVU game is shaping up to be an exciting game.

I'm traveling down to Greenville, NC tomorrow, most likely in tropical storm conditions! The game is still a go.

It's kind of like being at a real hurricane party, right?

are you basing this opinion on their win over a mediocre VT team last week?

It's going to be a good game, but I'm not sure why everyone's jumping on the ECU bandwagon all of the sudden. We beat them 45-7 last year, and even though ECU is probably better this year, I don't think they have enough of an advantage to beat us.

They beat VT with a blocked punt and were very lucky to win that game. VT isn't very good this year...just FYI

That was luck? ECU dominated them most of the game. VT was lucky to score a defensive TD on a mishandled backwards pass. They also scored 2pt on a return of a blocked PAT. ECU had 2 TOs that led to VT scores. They outgained them by over 100 yards in total offense. They beat them in every phase of the game. Penalties and TOs kept VT in the game. I don't know what is going to happen tomorrow, but they flat out beat VT.

They flat out beat VT because they aren't as experienced this year, and obviously don't have it together. Beamer even said so himself! They may have 'dominated' the game, but they didn't win it until they got a block punt, and that was luck! I'm giving full credit to ECU. They've usually played us pretty well. I'm just saying....last time it was 45-7. I think ECU will definitely close that margin up a lot, but even though my opinion may be biased, I still see WVU winning this game.

Rivalries and games aside, the important thing is that all of you in the storm's path stay safe. You all are far more important than any football game. :D ((((((football buddies)))))).

true. I was thinking they would've moved the game time up. ECU wants to try to keep this game on national TV (ESPN), so if they move it, they may lose that national exposure. However, I've just heard rumors that they might be meeting with ESPN and pushing it up to 7:30. If that's the case, there shouldn't be any problems.

Luckily I don't have to drive. We're taking a bus, so I'm sure they'll use caution.

Who else is headed to games tomorrow besides Melli? I'll be catching ND vs San Diego State. Weather looks like it is cooperating in South Bend.

..and in San Diego I am in some pain.

As much as we stunk last weekend,
State was on the verge of going up 20-7 on Notre Dame, with 13:50 left, when we fumble on the goal line.
The running back not covering up, protecting the ball
You could literally feel the shift of mo', the air went completely out of our boys.

The lucky Irish avoid what would have been a truly embarrassing loss,
and San Diego comes up just short...once again @#%@##$^&%^**!!!
