Going to the Mattresses
Not against Clemenza, but to sleep on
The wife and I are looking for a new king size bed. What are the BNer's opinions on memory foam, sleep number, etc? I am a pretty big guy so stamina over the long term is an issue. When we stayed at my in-laws they had a Europa memory foam that was very comfortable, but will it last? What are your thoughts.

My son has a memory foam mattress topper - it's the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. Don and I plan on buying a new bed and it's a consideration. I've got arthritis in both hips and on top of that I can usually only sleep on my side. Consequently I'm always waking up in pain and rolling over but when I stay at my son's and sleep on his bed my hips never hurt and I get a restful nights sleep with no waking up in pain to roll over.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I slept on a memory foam guest bed once and I have to tell you it was odd... at first it felt WONDERFUL .... but then pretty quickly it got way too warm. I did not sleep well at all. I did not care for the way the material sort of "surrounds" you.
I only stayed for one night at my friend's so I do not know if this is something which one adjusts to easily or not... just my 2¢.

We've had our memory foam for over a year...and we love it. We even bought the contoured memory foam pillows and we both sleep much better than before the new mattress & pillows.UAHparrothead wrote:Not against Clemenza, but to sleep on

I just bought myself a mattress last week. God.. I hope I never have to do it again. I didn't know that buying a mattress is like buying a car. In shopping at mattress stores, I was bullied at one place (Mattress Warehouse), mocked at another (Sleepys) and had a hard time getting any answers to questions at a third (Mattress Discounters). It seems that most dedicated mattress stores show you list price and you need to bargain a good deal. They also have you lay on a few different beds or a computer that profiles you, then they take you to the most expensive beds they have to lay on first so nothing else in the store feels as good in comparison.
I ended up purchasing my a Simmons Beautyrest Classic from Macy's and feel it was pretty stress free and I believe I got a good bed and a fair deal because the price is pretty much set there and at other department stores.
My opinions: I'm a big guy too. Memory foam is comfortable at first but gets hot after while. Temperpedic mattresses feel like rubber and take time to adjust if you shift. I've never tried a sleep number bed so I don't know. My thought is that I wouldn't adjust the mattress frequently enough to justify the additional cost, so I didn't bother looking. I liked the Simmons because of the independent coil design and it was very comfortable.
My best advice is to go lay on the beds and whatever you do, always leave and think about it overnight before you buy. I had many changes of heart before I felt confident about my decision and pushy salespeople won't want you to leave. Also, check the store's return policy. I found some won't let you return. Some want to charge $300. I believe Macy's & JC Penny only charge 10% and you get about 30 days to try it out. You only get 1 exchange though. If you do buy from one of the high pressure, need to bargain places, make your decision, make it known that you really like the mattress and are pretty much sold, make it known you still want to shop around and try to leave. The price drops rapidly when you're going to the competition.
Good luck!!! It was way more stressful than I anticipated.

My wife and I bought our mattress 10 years ago from Denver Mattress Co., it's still going strong and we love it.
Cheaper than the name brands, and it suits us well.

We got ours at Sleepy's. We knew exactly what we wanted, walked in and I told the salesman "We'll make this very easy. We want this exact mattress. the best price we got so far was $xxx from yyy. Can you beat this?" After the obligatory "let me talk to my manager", he beat the price by $100 and tossed in free delivery. No fuss, no muss.

If anyone watches Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t on Showtime, they just covered buying a new mattress two weeks ago.
After all was said and done, they said, test out mattresses and buy an affordable one since physiological issues affect your sleep more than the mattress. (Think about it, if you are really tired you can sleep on floor.)

When we are traveling we love to stay at Courtyards by Marriott. Why? Mostly because they have pillowtop Serta mattresses. We have a Sealy pillowtop at home that is nowhere near as comfortable. I would suggest finding a Courtyard near you and staying for a night for $80 and see what you think. When we get a house with a bigger bedroom, I will have a Serta pillowtop Kingsize right away!

I think that's part of physiological.ph4ever wrote:not if you have arthritis in both hipsblackjack wrote:If anyone watches Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t on Showtime, they just covered buying a new mattress two weeks ago.

But they did say test them adn find one that's comfortable, just because it's more expensive doesn't make it "better".

We checked out a lot of types and had experiences similar to what others have said. Memory foam was too hot, etc. etc.
We finally bought an off-brand sleep number. Absolutely LOVE it. I prefer an extra, extra, extra firm mattress, while she prefers kind of pillowy. This way we both get what we want/need.
I used to wake up aching all over. Now, I roll out feeling great.
They do cost a little more than a good conventional mattress, but we'll NEVER go back.
Good luck.

Things like this are what make it important to buy it from a place where you can exchange it if it doesn't work out. It's better to be set out a couple hundred extra bucks than to be stuck with a mattress that hurts you.blackjack wrote:I think that's part of physiological.ph4ever wrote:not if you have arthritis in both hipsblackjack wrote:If anyone watches Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t on Showtime, they just covered buying a new mattress two weeks ago.

I have never had a problem with it either - and part of the time I was sleeping on my son's I was going thru occasional night sweats.rednekkPH wrote:FWIW - I was a bit concerned about the stories I've heard about memory foam being too hot, but I have not experienced this whatsoever with ours.

I did pop my head in the door of a sleep number store at the mall and they had a little display of one of their bed materials next to regular bed material. You're supposed to put your hand on each and feel the temperature difference. The sleep number felt nice and cool while the other felt warm like a regular piece of fabric. I did like that nice cool feeling material whatever it was.ph4ever wrote:I have never had a problem with it either - and part of the time I was sleeping on my son's I was going thru occasional night sweats.rednekkPH wrote:FWIW - I was a bit concerned about the stories I've heard about memory foam being too hot, but I have not experienced this whatsoever with ours.

wBRs. That's what we have ... in fact, we have two ... we love them ...Bob Roberts wrote:When we are traveling we love to stay at Courtyards by Marriott. Why? FYI: I just got some fabulous down pillows on sale at Linens and Things ... have *never* paid that kind of money for something on which to put my head, but I have to say ... they're worth every penny ... they're heaven ... I do not toss and turn anymore ... and the only thing that's changed is my pillow.
