CC's $24 Billion Privatization 'And Not A Penny For Artists'

By Jeffrey Yorke

A $24 billion radio deal is enough to make anyone sit up and take note and performance royalties rights group musicFirst certainly has taken notice of the Clear Channel privatization deal that closed July 30.

"News that Clear Channel, the largest radio ownership group, has gone private for $24 billion casts a spotlight on radio’s failure to compensate the artists and musicians who bring music to life and listeners’ ears to the radio dial,” said Doyle Bartlett, executive director of musicFIRST today (July 31). “The contrasts could not be more stark -- $24 billion for corporate radio’s ownership, not a penny for America’s artists and musicians.”

ahhh.. hard to really pick a dog in this one

on one side: ClearChannel and their homogenized sound playlists where one size fits all in the way of music and if you don't fit the image you're gone

on the other: RIAA and the music companies who promote "artist of the minute" and do everything they can to make music less accessible. and waste money suing 50 year old grandmothers for music downloads.

hmmm...

And stuck in the middle - or more accurately, stuck to the bottom of the Big Folks' shoes - are the artists. Artists with record deals get literally pennies per copy if they're lucky, and indie artists can't get *on* radio unless we create something head-and-shoulders superior to what's already out there and get enough people to get behind it and *push*.

OTOH, I work the hours I like, I record the music I want to, I love my second "job," and I keep most of the money from each CD sale. It's got compensations.
