Who said it is not a sport? Not me . . . I implied that is should not be an Olympic Event. This actually raises an age old question . . .

What qualifies something as an Olympic Sport?

It seems to me if someone petitions for their "sport" or "event" to be part of the Olympics and there is enough interest (like water polo) they will add anything . . . badmitton to me is just ridiculous. Fun to play with cousins at bbq's in the summer . . . not, IMO, Olympic worthy. But I don't think there is a criteria, is there? Someone just has to take the time to state their case for their event . . .

to me the Olympics are basically track and field based . . . however, female gymnastics in the Summer Games and Figure Skating in the Winter Games are the big tv ratings draws. And that really is what it is all about when dealing with a world wide market.
What precisely is it about water polo that you think it should NOT be an olympic sport? Men's water polo has a long tradition in the Olympics (among the first sports added to the modern day Olympics - in 1900! And yes, I looked it up for the exact date, even though I was well schooled in the history), but it was until Sydney that Women's water polo had enough international support to become an Olympic event - it was a hard fought battle, since many countries out there don't think women should be playing such a rough sport.

Beer pong. Quarters.

They are really missing a lot of Olympic opportunities here.

I saw something on US Water Polo yesterday. I knew a few Water Polo Players in High School. Those guys (and now girls) are some of the best conditioned and toughest athletes you will ever meet in your life. I hope they win the gold. Although, I think Hungary is still pretty dominant in this area.

I didn't think water polo looked all that tough 'til hubby told me that their feet don't touch the ground and they have to stay above water and throw the ball. I kinda thought at first it was just an elaborate game of keep away. [smilie=blush.gif] [smilie=blush.gif]

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

One of Georgia's gold medals was in judo. The Georgian beat a Russian. They also beat Russia in beach volleyball, although I read both of the players from Georgia are actually native Brazilians.

I had heard that both of the volleyball players were from Brazil also.

It was the 1956 Games where the Russians and Hungarians played in Water Polo after the Soviet Union invaded Hungary. Many consider it the greatest Water Polo Match ever played.
