I have become disillusioned with this whole "parrothead" thing as well as this website. Maybe I am just sour grapes because of the lousy economy, etc, but I don't like the idea that I am truly becoming one of the few resident "grouches".
One of the threads argues "this is a FAN website. Fans don't complain."
I guess I am not a "fan" as I find myself increasingly complaining. To me "the thrill is gone" as far as choosing to spend time/$ at Buffett shows. I can't stand the lawn antics and, on average, a Buffett weekend with tickets, hotel, gas is $600 plus. Way too many better things for me, a "man of limited means" to do with $600.
So, at the risk of being a resident "grouch" instead of a happy "fan", I don't want to be able to post on this site any longer. I am a grouch when it comes to the typical show experience and I don't want to keep complaining. It's very negative psychic energy. I also agree it is a pointless exercise to visit a fan site and spend more time complaining.
There are so many amazingly nice people on this site and I don't want to be one of the few bellyachers who gets bent out of shape about things which, obviously, are not important enough to cause me to have a negative attitude. So Jimmy Buffett did not play that interesting of a set list in Newport. There must be something wrong with me to actually care about such a meaningless thing. I kind of think that I am using stupid things like the show set list as a weird subliminal way to vent about things that are actually huge concerns. To paraphrase Confucius, these are very "interesting times" and I am very on edge about the economy which is having a very direct impact on my job and my wife's job.
Anyway....
Phins up to you all, but I'd like to swim on in another direction with my Buffett phanaticsm being left in my wake.
So, please cancel my Buffett News membership if such a thing is possible.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

"you can never leave"
Wander off for awhile, but if a Buffett song plays sometime down the road and you feel like dipping your toes back into the water....
BN will still be here, and you can post in one of the 'whatever happened to' threads!
Living my life...
One Tropical Day at a Time!

One Tropical Day at a Time!

I am one of those folks who believe that the true fan is the fan that loves the positive, recognizes the negative, and feels free to criticize, but still finds the overall experience worth it.
I know you have sounded really down on the whole thing lately, and I know others have gone through this as well. It also seems that you probably still feel really postively about the music. So maybe pull back from the other stuff-the concerts, the in person experience, and, yes, even buffettnews.
But if you enjoy the music, revisit it and value that.
And, should you find the desire to come back and hang out with us, remember, We're still here!

I am just being part whiner, part self indulgent jerk, part goofball and part plain old PITA. (pain in the...)
I agree. I think the "Jimmy Sabbatical" is the way to go.
Things are actually going pretty well and I am being an EEYORE. Big time.
I just got married 3 weeks ago to an amazing girl and I am kind of terrified about building a great, happy, comfortable life for us in a State that is last in the nation in virtually all economic indicators.
I haven't been fly fishing in months. The salmon are starting to run. I just need to go fishing SOON and that usually recharges the batteries.
Thanks, everyone. Again, sorry for the "whine" and sorry to use this site as a venting tool.
Jimmy is still a huge hero and "A Salty Piece of Land" and "The Wino and I Know" will always be two of my favorite songs.
The Wino and I Know - Gosh, how many of us see a part of ourselves in that amazing song.
Here are the lyrics just to put a big smile on my face on a challenging Monday.
Thanks, everyone. From a guy who's "just tryin’ to get by being quiet and shy In a world full of pushin’ and shove."
Paul - No Longer a Grouch, Just a PITA
Jimmy Buffett - The Wino and I Know
The ice cream man he’s a hillbilly fan
He’s got seventy-eights by Hank Snow
Walks down the street, shufflin’ his feet
To the rhythm that only he knows
And I’ve seen him in so many places
I saw him the night I was born
In a Bourbon Street bar I received my first scar
From an old man so tattered and torn
And the Wino and I know the pains of street singin’
Like the door-to-door salesman knows
the pains of bell ringin’
It’s a strange situation
a wild occupation
Living my life like a song
Well the coffee is strong
at the Cafe Du Monde
And the donuts are too hot to touch
But just like a fool, when those
sweet goodies cool, I ate ’til I ate way too much
Cause I’m livin’ on things that excite me
Be they pastries or lobsters or love
I’m just tryin’ to get by being quiet and shy
In a world full of pushin’ and shove
And the Wino and I know the pains of backbustin’
Like the farmer knows the pain of his pick-up
truck rustin’
It’s a strange situation, a wild occupation
Living my life like a song
Sweet Senorita, Won’t you please come with me
Back to the island, honey, back to the sea
Back to the only place that I want to be
And the Wino and I know the joys of the ocean
Like a boy knows the joys of his milkshake
in motion
It’s a strange situation, a wild occupation
Living my life like a song
Yes, It’s a strange situation, a wild occupation

My first reaction was to say "Wahhhhhh! I'm grouchy. I quit."
But after reading your post three times before responding, I think you might be on the edge of needing some additional help...seriously. Obviously the economy is putting a serious strain on you, your relationships, your hobbies and your job. You might want to talk to a professional about this.
As for our standpoint, this year, we went to the Philly show and we are going to meet some BNers in Atlantic City before the show. We are not going to the AC show. Doesn't mean we aren't Parrotheads or fans. It's just what we can do in these times and half the fun is meeting with old adn new friends that are part of the Phlock.
I hope you find your groove and return to YOUR one particular harbor.
Be well.
Joe

While I cannot completely relate, I do admire your honesty Paul, and your ability to analyze your thoughts and actions objectively.
Do whatcha gotta do! We'll be here if you need us!
And you'll always have some amazing memories, that we were all fortunate to have you share with us!
By the way, if you really wanted to cancel, and if you don't know, you'd need to contact phjim - he's the only one who could grant your request.

It's ok to be a grouch sometimes doesn't make you any less a fan. We all go through emotional and economic shifts. Sacrificing a concert could be one but abandoning a low cost social space is pretty extreme. I'm another one of those 'non-fans' that doesn't see the value in traveling for extra shows. I still listen to RM daily and listen to a lot more Peter Mayer when at home. I also have been going to shows where I see more value. I do miss the Buffett experience but am finding out that some of the other performers experiences are just as good. I am a member at some other more diverse forums that are experiencing similar feelings among members. Take care of the important things enjoy the diversions.
Rub yours on me and I'll rub mine on you

. .it really is still there. . just sometimes gets covered up by that thing we call " life " . .
. . it will feel good again . .I promise. .
