Sorry it's a valid news story. Google, "Obama's flag pin," and you'll see there's over 500,000 results. Also, news organizations like Time, ABC News and The LA Times all have reported on this issue. Obama made it a camapign issue. I was simply being a smart ass again.ScarletB wrote:He made a good point in his speech last night that when you have no new ideas to present and no positive record to stand on you use fear and attacks to keep people from looking at something different. Yes. Sounds like the same bloviating that most politicians do all the time. Saying one thing and doing it is another thing.Martonian wrote:Obama has no new ideals? You could end up being right. He certainly offers new ideas though, and changes from the last 8 years. And with a likely increased majority in the House and Senate, it's likely that Obama would be able to deliver on many of his promises (I bet that scares some of youdiverg wrote:Yes. I'm curious...what are some of his 'new' ideas? What changes is he going to make?Martonian wrote: You could end up being right. Especially when most 'changes' have to go though the Senate and the House.Skibo wrote:I'm curious...what are some of his 'new' ideas? Like I said before, if Obama is elected, he'll likely have an even bigger majority in both the House and Senate, so it will be much easier for Obama to get his ideas passed then anything McCain is pushing if he were to get elected.SMLCHNG wrote:Especially when most 'changes' have to go though the Senate and the House.Skibo wrote:I'm curious...what are some of his 'new' ideas? As for new ideas, changing our economic system from trickle down to trickle up, giving tax breaks to the middle class instead of to the rich, end the war in Iraq responsibly, change the focus to the fight in Afghanistan, actually provide adequate equipment to our troops when they are sent into battle, restore alliances around the world, lower the costs of health care, simplify tax filings, invest heavily in renewable energy, restore our image in the world, change our diplomatic approach around the world, the list goes on and on.
If you don't understand what he wants to change, then I think you just don't want to hear it. If you want 4 more years of the same policies of the last 8 years, then by all means I encourage you to vote for John McCain.
If you'd like to learn more, I'd encourage you to visit Obama's website... www.barackobama.com , where he lays everything out.

Oh, I understand alright.. and I've heard it. I have just heard 'promises of change' many times in my lifetime. And they don't seem to happen once someone becomes President.Martonian wrote: If you don't understand what he wants to change, then I think you just don't want to hear it.

That's fair enough. But folks always say that he always says "change, change, change" but doesn't state what the change is, but if you actually listen to him or visit his website, you can see what he wants to change. But even for me, just a general change from the direction our country has been on the last 8 years would be a good thing.SMLCHNG wrote:Oh, I understand alright.. and I've heard it. This sounds like more of the same. The only thing different here than the Bush tax cuts is that Obama wants to exclude the rich in his cuts. Tax cuts are an old worn out Republican idea. Taxing the rich is an old worn out Democrat idea.Martonian wrote:As for new ideas, changing our economic system from trickle down to trickle up, giving tax breaks to the middle class instead of to the rich
I think everyone wants to end the war responsibly. Even GWB is talking with the Iraqis about a withdrawal timeline. Seems like Obama has changed his position here from 3-6 month withdrawal to a long prolonged withdrawalMartonian wrote: end the war in Iraq responsibly
If he does change the focus to Afghanistan, then how many additional troops does he plan on deploying. He hasn't mentioned the plan for focusing the fight. many agree with the idea of focusing on Afghanistan even McCain agrees with this. I am curious as to what makes this so new. Oh, yeah, the insinuation that adequate equipment will be provided implies that it is currently being withheld. This is just a fluff statement IMO unless someone can show where any existing equipment is being held back.Martonian wrote:change the focus to the fight in Afghanistan, actually provide adequate equipment to our troops when they are sent into battle
Who in the world do we need to restore alliances with? Russia? never had one...China...same as russia. France? Screw them they are irrelevent besides their newest leader has been kissing up to us lately. The Brits still love us. The Muslim world never liked us and never will unless of course Obama hands out Korans and forces us all to convert or die.Martonian wrote:restore alliances around the world,
LOL I think every politician has said this. Show me one that has ever said I want to increase the cost of health care. Tax filings are very simple if you live a simple life. The 1040EZ is all most younger and senior filers need. For people making under $75,000 it is pretty simple. For higher wage earners that have investments and other forms of income yeah it is pretty difficult, I really don't think he is trying to appeal to the rich with his simpler tax position. If he is I say yea! I'm tired of getting conflicting answers from the IRS when I call for a clarification on a form.Martonian wrote:simplify tax filings
This sounds nice but really doesn't have much bite. There are already plenty or "renewable" energy sources that are being harnessed. The Europeans are far ahead of us. There are plenty of companies already doing the research and deployment of these new energy. Throwing money at a problem isn't much of a new idea. Eliminating government regulations that are slowing research and deployment of technologies now that would be a new idea.Martonian wrote:invest heavily in renewable energy
Here again words. We are still the country that most of the world tries to emulate. We are the country that hands out the most relief when disasters occur.Martonian wrote:restore our image in the world, change our diplomatic approach around the world, the list goes on and on.
Thing is I do understand what he wants to change. I have reviewed his website many times. If you go through his entire website and figure out the cost of his new programs - with the tax cuts...you will find that he is proposing greater deficit spending than the Bush administration. No I won't be voting for McCain. Even though Obama has said it will be 4 more years. McCain and Bush are two very different people...or at least they were before McCain started flipping to appeal to the conservative side of the party.Martonian wrote:If you don't understand what he wants to change, then I think you just don't want to hear it. McCain is just a flip flopper that will say whatever he needs to say to appeal to his audience now. I don't know what kind of president he would be. A Bush clone or a Liberal loving Maverick? I'm sure if the Kennedy/McCain bill crossed his desk he would sign it.
Rub yours on me and I'll rub mine on you
Obama just thinks that the Bush tax cuts favored the wealthy too much. Even John McCain originally said that the Bush tax cuts were too heavily weighted towards the rich. Of course now John McCain has changed his position on this to win the Republican base. Obama wants to roll tax policy back to what it was in the 90's under Clinton.Skibo wrote:Martonian wrote:

Exactly, Bush and Maliki have come around to Obama's position. McCain is now the only one that doesn't support a timeline.Skibo wrote:I think everyone wants to end the war responsibly. He has said several times that he will immediately send two additional brigades to Afghanistan. And if you look at McCain's judgment on Afghanistan over the years, he said 3 or 4 years ago that Afghanistan was a success.Skibo wrote:If he does change the focus to Afghanistan, then how many additional troops does he plan on deploying. As for equipment, as troops were sent into Iraq without adequate equipment and armor. When a soldier queried Donald Rumsfeld about this, Rumsfeld famously said that you go to war with the equipment you have, not what you want. And along the same lines, Obama was at the forefront of the 21st century GI Bill, while Bush and McCain opposed it because they felt it rewarded soldiers too much. Of course now McCain disingenuously tries to take credit for the new GI Bill.
That's just the attitude that has dominated the last 8 years that we don't need. Look at international opinion polls of the United States and you'll see that they've declined during Bush's term. Now you may say screw everybody else, but when China and India are emerging powers, Russia is starting to act like the Soviet Union again, we are going to need the help of allies. Look at what going at it alone has gotten us in Iraq.Skibo wrote:Who in the world do we need to restore alliances with? Russia? never had one...China...same as russia. France? Health care costs have skyrocketed under the current administration. Democrats have long been a champion for health care. I'm young and my tax filings are not that simple. I have income coming from one main source, and then several different sources. Sure we are starting to get renewable energy, but we need much, much more. John McCain has voted many, many times against renewable energy. Drilling is not the answer, and Obama knows it. I agree though that the private sector needs to take the lead on this... I agree with Pickens.Skibo wrote:This sounds nice but really doesn't have much bite. Since the rich pay a higher percentage of their income it would make sense that they would have a larger cut. There are many proponents of a flat tax. This would also contribute in making taxes much simplier. The rich will get the largest cut if this is ever implemented. Is that fair?Martonian wrote: Obama just thinks that the Bush tax cuts favored the wealthy too much. Maliki is the one now pushing to get the US out of Iraq and the Bush administration is working to satisfy the will of the Iraqi people. I believe McCain will do the same.Martonian wrote:Exactly, Bush and Maliki have come around to Obama's position. McCain is now the only one that doesn't support a timeline.
Well Rummy is right here. The quality of care has also increased. What would Obama and the democrat controlled congress do? Price controls? Pay for the costs with tax dollars? What about limiting malpractice suits? Nah never the lawyer lobby needs to be satisfied. How about limiting advertising of prescription drugs to medical journals? Oh, pharmaceuticals contribute a lot of money too. Maybe the congress could just stop passing additional regulations that add costs to the care. When HIPPAA was passed there was a lot of new costs that the doctors had to pass on to their patients.Martonian wrote: Health care costs have skyrocketed under the current administration.
