This will go down as a bigger gaffe and joke than Dan Quayle's nomination of '88
at least, Quayle could deliver Indiana's votes.
Governor Tina Fey-Palin is no Hillary, and that won't deliver the women's vote.

She may have only been a governor for 18 months but that means she has 18 months experience running a state. That's 18 months more experience than Obama has running anything.Lightning Bolt wrote:A Governor for only 18 months of a distant state... before that, a mayor of a city of 8,000...

but it's not like the republican party would have any other viable options to keep obama out, so by not voting mccain, they are essentially voting obama.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:except he would have lost 25% of the republican party vote, lost close to 90% of the mega money donors to the party, and have had a convention fight on his hands... not the best way to win an election.buffettbride wrote: McCain could have won the Hillary voters if he picked a VP who supported gay and abortion rights.
what would be worse for the party, 4 years for mccain (because there's no way he would be able to run again) or 8 for obama?

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.
Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.
She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.
She had earned stripes — and enmity — after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

<<---- but there are also women who won't vote for a woman just because she's a woman. I don't care who they are, what they look like, their skin color (do they bleed red? yuh-huh), or their religious affiliation (as long as they leave it outside the oval office).... they're gonna have to win my vote based on issues, so they better start talking about those issues....BFinnsUp wrote:I still think there is a group of women that would have voted for Hillary because she is a woman, and will now vote this ticket because of Palin. In every election there is a group that doesn't feel either side truly represents their view and therefore they vote on some other criteria, those that voted for Carter because of his smile for instance. Don't get me wrong, a switch like you mentioned would pull a lot more over.

McCain could have won the Hillary voters if he picked a VP who supported gay and abortion rights. There was some credibility to the recent commercial about the woman voting for a republican for the first time.
There's no way he'll get those votes now unless Palin suddenly decides she's a rug munching abortionist.
McCain/Palin most definitely aren't.

it will be interesting to see how far the democrats can push the envelope in the ads before a backlash builds up--"She's a woman." "She's a mom." "Her son has Down's"--in regards to the negative personal attacks this country's become so well known for.
