I had the opportunity to observe the media yesterday that was covering the McCain-Palin appearance in Colorado Springs. What a bunch of spoiled rotten crybabies. I'll bet their mothers don't know how they behave.
The media is crying now to cover their asses because they didn't see the Palin announcement coming. They didn't see it because they were sitting around in air-conditioned tents, eating catered food and waiting for the next utterance of the messiah.
In the absence of an official "short list" provided by the party or the campaign, the media fabricated a list based on their best guess. None of them was smart enough to include Governor Sarah Palin's name on that list.
While they recirculated rumors about Secret Service protection for Romney's family and speculated about Governor Pawlenty's sudden return to Minnesota from Denver, the real nominee boarded a plane and flew to the site of the announcement. The media missed the story.
I hate to see Tim Russert's name drug into the matter because I think he would be embarrassed by it. Tim probably would have been the first to invite Sarah Palin to appear on his show and he would've done it before the nomination. He did his homework and he did it more thoroughly than anyone else in the business.
Actually, Palin's name had come up, though most felt she was a longshot. And, the night before the annoucement, MSNBC reported that a pirvate plane had left Alaska en route to Ohio. When MSNBC contacted tha campaign to confirm, they were told that a number of people on the short list were being flown to Ohio.
The reporting I have followed has clearly indicated that McCain was determined to name Lieberman, and it was only in the last few days that party officials convinced him this would lead to a floor fight and basically talked him out of it.
Nobody saw the announcement coming in part because it appears that the candidate decided at the last minute.

Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Elrod, I don't think anyone here made any disparaging remarks against Tim in regards to being the media or press. In fact I'd say we were lamenting the fact that he wasn't here to help all of us, regardless of "sides", gain some insight into Gov. Palin. He was honest and fair, and his opinions garnered the utmost respect. I think a lot of the media crap wouldn't be an issue if Timmy were still with us. That's certainly why *I* brought his name up.
I'm sure Tim would have invited Gov. Palin to be on his show. That doesn't mean she would have accepted...at least not until she felt comfortable with the level of questioning he'd raise with her. And if that were the case, Tim would have made his opinion about it very clear.
Well said, Kath. Tim would have invited her. It's not the invites that are the problem. Everyone's invited her. McCain's campaign director is the one keeping her under wraps.
I haven't talked to one news source who said they're angry about missing the story ... in fact, they like the fact that they're getting to break the stories on her, since the campaigns didn't have anything ... campaigns usually control the flow of information ... they are the ones doing the feeding, not having to find out from the press about the pork, the library, the legal issues with the pork-purchased ice rink, the people who served with her ...
It's the no access to the VP candidate that has them frothing.
And I can promise you, if Biden was in hiding, the yelling from the Republicans would be a lot louder than what we're hearing from the press.
If she's not ready to meet the press, how can she be ready to meet Putin?
She needs to call a press conference and show 'em what a pit bull in lipstick looks like ... if she can throw a punch, she needs to be able to take a punch. They're the ones who said she was ready to be VP ...
A memorized speech, well delivered zingers and a scripted stump speech does not a candidate make. And, a one-on-one chat with Charlie is not access to the media. Standing in front a room full of press from all over the country firing questions at her ... like what happens in the White House briefing room ... will prove she's ready.

I offer this suggestion as gently as I can:
If you think this country is in a fine mess, look in the mirror not across the aisle.
If you think this country is just fine, you need to pull your head out of your ___.

Under pressure for being shielded for questioning, Sarah Palin has a agreed to sit down with Charles Gibson of ABC’s “World News Tonight,” according to an ABC News official.
No other interviews are scheduled. It will be the first TV interview for Palin since she was named 10 days ago as running mate to John McCain.
Palin had planned to return to Alaska this weekend but is so popular on the stump that she is going to stay out a few more days before returning home. One of her sons deploys to Iraq on Thursday.
Palin plans to sit down with Gibson later this week in Alaska, the source said.
The McCain campaign kept her off Sunday shows this weekend and plans to be sparing with high-risk network encounters, which they contend are unimportant to voters despite the media’s fixation on them.
But McCain officials could see her reticence was feeding the narrative of her being unprepared for the job.
Joe Biden of Delaware, her counterpart on the Democratic ticket, challenged her Sunday to submit to network questioning.
“She's a smart, tough politician,” Biden told Tom Brokaw in a “Meet the Press” interview live from Wilmington, Del. “So I think she's going to be formidable. Eventually, she's going to have to sit in front of you like I'm doing and have done. Eventually, she's going to have to answer questions and not be sequestered. Eventually, she's going to have to answer on the record.”
Kind of interesting since Biden took the week off after the DNC, but Sarah isn't afforded the same luxury as the plagiarist.

That is a heck of a bounce that the McCain ticket got out of the RNC. Not only did he get an 8 point swing, but probably more importantly he got to 50%.

Wait 'til the debates...
We've got to get past all the "rah-rah" grandstanding of the conventions,
and get down to the heart of what defines the candidates.
