I doubt my fat A** could learn to surf, but I might just give it a try if Sunrise is still working.surfpirate wrote:I was in Costa Rica in January '06 ..... LOVED it. After 4 days in the Arenal volcano rain forest region we finally went to the coast. For 3 days each morning I took a 3 hour longboard lesson from a beautiful 22 year old girl named Sunrise (honest). I was in Playa Samara where her father owned a Gym and Surf Shop right on the beach. For much of the 3 hours each morning, she and I were the only ones in the water. The beach at Playa Samara was in a protected cove and had perfect waves for longboarding ... consistent, long breaking along the coast and only about 3-4 feet. I am a retired short boarder from my younger days ... and quite frankly was never that good on a short board. Longboarding has rejuvinated my surf spirit.diverg wrote:SP I;m leaving for Costa Rica for 2 months on Saturday. Can Costa Rica get a Critters tour stop while I'm down there?
BTW I hear there is some great surfing in CR.
For the big waves of Costa Rica ... you want Tamarinda and the spots in that area of the coast. Lots of info out there if you google Costa Rica Surf. Enjoy!
Here are a few photos from Playa Samara.

Dennis Wilson, the original drummer and one of the founding Beach Boys ....... was the only Beach Boy who could actually surf.pojo wrote:looks like we have the digital aged version of the Beach Boys!!!!!!!!!
Surfer Duck..... can the hog get up on a surf board?
Dennis drowned in 1983. Every touring Mike Love version of the Beach Boys from that day forward was missing any semblance of the original innocence (Brian Wilson had quit touring way back in the 1960s). Today's touring Beach Boys, still led by Mike Love is sadly, in my opinion, a nostalgic joke.

Next time I hear THAT song, I'm gonna yell out WAX WAX WAX.
Learning through Buffettnews and CRITTERVILLE!

I posted this in the Jones Beach thread, but this CRITTERVILLE made me think of it.

Ride The Glide is a term my friend Allan Weisbeckerused in his classic surf tale IN SEARCH OF CAPTAIN ZERO. It describes that perfect patch of smooth salt water two steps ahead of a crashing wave where gravity is taking YOU for a ride on a very wet magic carpet.
To me Ride The Glide is surfing in the free waters. The wave can be two feet tall or twenty feet tall, but the glide is what you are always looking for...and after many, many years I like to compare the thrill of writing, singing, and performing to that of riding the wave.
When I do I understand what a remarkably long and wonderful ride it has been. Out on the ocean you pray to the surf gods for waves, deliverance, rock relocation and salvation and about a hundred other things that are going through your mind as you attempt to ride the ocean.
On the stage you ride the audiences emotions that are fed, not by weather systems??, but by words and music. It is a great symbiotic relationship and personally I'm gonna ride this wave until somebody kicks me off.
So this collection of songs is kind of your musical wave upon which you can ride. I'm not gonna say that you can hold this tin box up to your ear and hear the ocean, but then again, maybe you can.
Maybe the Hokey Pokey is really what it's all about. Maybe that's what we've been doing all along...just Riding The Glide.
Anyway, think of this collection as your own wave. There's NOBODY else on it but you. Now, the sun has set and all there is left to do is Ride The Glide.
August 08, Montauk, New York.
Stay stoked...
(Treat yourself to reading more about Allan Weisbecker.)

Hey! Cool read Conched! Those are some right on the money quotes about what it feels like to ride a wave,
and I like the analogy to performing. Thanks!
I submitted an earlier version of my "Critterville" lyrics to the USA Today's
"Write a new first verse for Margaritaville" contest earlier this summer.
Now while my lyrics may not win, they have got to be better than this scary guy's lyrics
which you can see and hear on YouTube ..... RIGHT HERE.
Scary because of his "I love you Jimmy" and also because he somehow has attempted to rhyme
blender/neighbors
saiboats/gulf coast
beach/disappeared
Enjoy (or not).
