All of the bars on Front Street (which is the main road) in Lahaina are a great place to spend an afternoon or evening (my favorite one was the Whale's Tale, which is no longer there). There's actually a "Cheeseburger In Paradise" there, NOT affiliated with Jimmy Buffett in any way-his attorneys tried suing the management there a few years ago for the use of the name, and it ended up being settled out of court.
The music of Gail Swanson, the regular house musician there, will definately put you in a tropical mood.
None of those bars are actual Tiki Bars-the only one that I know of on the entire island is a place in Hana called "Half-Hearted Hana's", but if you survive the highway to Hana, you'll definately need LOTS of Mai Tai's and whatever else to calm your nerves.
Whatever you decide when you're there, have fun.

My second trip to Maui was in October a couple of years ago. As Garry said, head to Front St in Lahaina, you'll find plenty of places to enjoy a Mai Tai on the water.
And I absolutely loved the 'road to Hana' and swear next time...I'll be on a Harley making that ride.
So many awesome spots to stop along the way...pack up a cooler of your own adult beverages and just take it all in as you go.
Can't wait until my next trip there. Have FUN!!!!!

Barry - if you EVER get the chance to go...do it! I went so many years not ever really having the desire to go there. But that first trip...was just amazing..and the second..even more. I've been to Honolulu/Waikiki...but something about Maui...just totally stole my heart. I think it may have something to do with it reminds me a little of Ireland...and well....we all know how I feel about Ireland...a BIG part of my heart is still in Ireland..specifically Killiney, Co Dublin.Marnin Grita Guy wrote:VanillaGrl wrote:My second trip to Maui was in October a couple of years ago. Sounds like Front St is the place to be. I think we will hit that after some surfing and burgers at CIPCane Garden Bay wrote:It shall be a grand trip Continental Drifter III!!! I can't wait!! Only 41 days to Maui. I still think we should hop on the shuttle & see Henry Kapono at Duke's.

Stop by Cool Cat's (sort of next to/across from the old Whale's Tale) and say hi to Erik Peitch (The Whale Shark).... Go on down to 505 Front Street and to Goofy Foot surf school (the owner is Jimmy's surfing buddy and his part time instructor....). The road to Hana IS cool...BUT the road the rest of the way around the island is even cooler....go visit Charles Lindburg's grave at the old church.....sunrise from Haleakala...take a bottle of soap bubbles and blow bubbles in the fresh morning air......take a mountain bike ride Down Haeakala.....ContinentalDrifterIII wrote:Sounds like Front St is the place to be. My Wife and I got Married Five Years ago at Sunset in Maui. We then had Our One-Week Honeymoon there.

Good breakfast and nice location in Lahaina.
It was nice buying fresh fruit (apple bananas and pineapple) along the Road to Hana too.
I just get that relaxing feeling everytime I think about being there!
Enjoy!!!

Re: Aloha!
That is one of my fav memories.... we stopped at one of the little stands on one of the side roads...no one in sight...picked out what we wanted (love the 'starfruit'), put the money in the box and went on our way.MileHighPirate wrote:Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Maui!

Glad you had the same enjoyment of that memorable moment.
I think just the simplicity of "being in the moment" and getting some fresh island fruit for the journey made it great.
At the time we went, it was something like 4 for a dollar Apple Bananas. We had a bunch of bananas inbetween the front driver and passenger seat for handy fresh fruit sampling.
Since I'm going back down Memory (Hana) Lane (Road), standouts on the Road to Hana were the Volcano Rock Church, Black Sand Beach, Secluded Waterfalls. Hell, ALL OF IT!!!
The Town of Makawao (Upcountry Maui) is a great place to visit too.
http://www.mauibnbcottages.com/hidden_c ... _month.htm
THAT is where we stayed for the 2nd Half of Our Honeymoon. Upcountry Maui in "THE HIDDEN COTTAGE."
It had an outdoor jacuzzi tub on a secluded deck. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
This was five years ago.
However........don't know if this still exists as a rental because I can't find the website anymore. The owners at the time did a very impressive set-up with both the interior of the cottage and the amenities (they had a fresh pineapple and samples of Hawaiian Goods waiting for us upon arrival.)
Wow. This thread is making me want to get out our scrapbook of pics now of Maui to look back on the amazing trip and time that it was!
Aloha, indeed!

Sounds like you had a great honeymoon. My wife, Lil Salty, and I went there on our honeymoon too. It was the best vacation ever - so many great memories!
This time I am going with my bro and father in law. We plan on going to goof foot surf school and hitting as many bars as we can. I went to Mama's last time I was there. Maybe we will go there one night too.

My wife and I just spent the last week of August in Maui and loved it, even though we're still partial to the Caribbean. We stayed in a 1 bedroom condo over in Kaanapali. We definitely "second" Mama's Fish House as a must do. We made it about 1/2 way down the road to Hana, but my passenger started to feel a little more than queasy so we turned around and stopped in Paia for a while, then had a fantastic lunch at Mama's. In Whaler's Village (Kaanapali) there are a couple of great restaurants from the same chain (TS Restaurants) as Duke's: Leilani's and Hula Grill. Lahaina was a lot of fun too, with more of a laid back feel than Kaanapali and some great little restaurants and bars. Cheeseburger in Paradise (Cheeseburgerland) is a great place to grab a burger and a beer.
Sorry, no advice on the Mai Tai's ... not one of my favorites.
Have a great trip! You're stopping in Vegas on the way home for the Oct 25 show aren't you? Who knows, maybe we'll run into you there.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.
