He was always my favorite.

One thing about the Monkees. For a contrived boy band, they did put out some pretty good music. I always liked Last Train to Clarksville.

you're right, they did have 2 hits....hard to remember details on insignificant bands such as they were

I don't know too much about them, except they were around long enough to make a few hundred dollars.

Oddly the least talented Davy Jones was the most popular. He did after all take Marcia Brady to her prom (as well as being featured on umpteen zillion Seventeen Magazine covers).
Micky Dolenz was/is a GREAT singer, and an even better actor.

A not so well known fact about Davy Jones-he was a child actor, and, at age 17, appeared as the Artful Dodger in the travelling musical "Oliver."
They were given a slot on the American variety show "The Ed Sullivan Show" on Feb. 9th, 1964, which, incidentally was the same night these OTHER four guys from England made their American TV debut.
Their name escapes me at the moment, as do some of their songs.
Perhaps someone can help me out.

Contrived or not, they put out some DAMN good music.

I don't know if I ever had a FAVORITE Monkee-I guess I loved them all equally for different reasons-
Mike for his intellect and the stories he told (and he's from Texas)
Micky because he played the drums-just like I did back in those days (and I loved his songs "Sometime In the Morning" and "The Girl That I Knew Somewhere")
Peter because he made me laugh the hardest
And Davy because he was from England, where I wanted to be from back then.

Mike Nesmith had some great songs he did as a Monkee too.

When they made their debut in 1966, they were all the rage all over the country, and, without ever having heard them or saw the TV show, I actually HATED them, because, I felt, they were a threat to the popularity of the Beatles (who were to me then what Jimmy Buffett is to me now-except I never got to go to 35-plus of THEIR concerts).
Anyway, I finally watched an episode of "The Monkees" TV show toward the end of 1966, and I was hooked ever since.

Not to change the subject , but I saw Ringo on Larry King recently, and he looks amazing....and he's pushing 70. If you didn't know better, you would swear he ain't a day past 50, if that ! And that's not just his looks, his attitude and everything are that of a man much younger than his year count.

A book you should definately read is "The Love You Make" by their longtime friend Peter Brown.
One guy I absolutely want to meet is Ringo Starr.
He was the reason I took up the drums when I was a young 'un, and, if I had a favorite Beatle, he'd be it.
Reading the life stories of each of them, I felt he was the one I most identified with.
I always thought John had the most pure talent, I always thought Paul was the most creative, I always thought George had the best singing voice (I literally MELT whenever I hear "I Need You" and "Here Comes the Sun"), and Ringo was the one I identified with.
Four guys, one band, millions of happy fans.
I wish everyone could've been around to experience it.
It was nothing short of awesome.

And Ringo's wife is "only" 10 years younger than he is.
Not such a big deal these days.

Paul McCartney knows, he is the next Beatle to go.

Ringo: takes over for a better drummer named Pete Best... ends up in the biggest band of the decade. Then, when the crap hits the fan and the cute one and the intellectual one in the band try killing each other, he ends up in the All Starr Band with musicians killing themselves to get to play with him. Shows up for a really crappy movie set in 9million BC, ends up with an incredible babe, whom he is still with as we speak. then, hits it big with a line of artwork and an appearance on the Simpsons when it is still cool.

Yes, God loves the funny lookin' Liverpudlian, and Paul, is just marking time until God calls him home.

You got that right!!! If I remember correctly, "I need you" was off of the "HELP" album, wasn't it? One of my favorites, along with Revolver and Rubber Soul.

Yes, indeed, "I Need You" is off of the "Help" soundtrack album, and was preformed by George in the movie itself.
Hard to believe he was barely 22 years old when he wrote that dynamite song.
He was SO under-rated and under-appreciated.
A mysterious, yet outgoing down-to earth gentleman who was taken from us way WAY too soon.
