Afternoon Concerts

Post by CTParrothead763 »

The time of the Great Woods show on 9/6 was changed from 8 to 3 due to the impending storm.

I for one did not mind.

In fact, it was kind of nice. We didn't have to rush out after the show, and even with a two hour drive got home at a relatively decent time.

Maybe late afternoon like 5 would be even better. Would give a little more time for pre-concert festivities. Probably never happen, but any thoughts out there?

I think it's perfect when the tailgate party ends at sunset
then the stagelights come up and... let the show begin!!

In the summer, that usually means 8:30pm
In the fall, make it more like 6:30pm

My girlfriend and I really liked the 3 PM start also.

I was laughing and wondering if we were getting so old that we wanted to go to a 3 PM show and then grab a nosh afterwards...

and.....I'm sure most folks on this board might remember that back in the 90's, Jimmy actually DID include a Sunday afternoon show in a few of his years of coming to GW-------it was back when he did 3 shows on Labor Day weekend......before he scaled back the workload a bit !

The Labor Day show at Wrigley was at 2 pm, and the Sunday night show was at 6 pm, I believe.

Maybe a little later in the day. The 4:15 AM wake up call for the day of the concert I could have done without.

I take it your post party was somewhere other than the parking lot? After the concert we were unaware that the police would be forcing everyone into line, can't say out because you couldn't just leave due to traffic. We had no more than setup after the show and put the food on the grill when the police came by and told us the parking lot was closed and we had to leave. We looked around at the gridlock of traffic in disbelief and told them we had food on the grill but would leave as soon as we had it off and had a quick bite. The cops were back in five minutes this time yelling at us that we had better leave now or else! It made no sense to force us into waiting in our car in the gridlock of emptying the parking lot when we could have joined the traffic twenty minutes later with food in our stomachs and less stress and traffic would have STILL been streaming out of the parking lot. It's much better in Foxboro where they give you at least an hour and a half until they start asking people to leave and they don't try to intimidate anyone.

I like the 3pm start. It was a nice change of pace. Not sure if I would want all shows to start that early, especially a weekday show. In years past they would give you about an hour maybe more, depending on traffic to get out of the lot.

A few years back we lit the grill after the show and cooked up some tips. The traffic had just about cleared and we had just started packing up. About 3 cops came by on their bikes and were making announcements to start packing up. I said no problem and asked if they wanted any food/drink. They each took a water and thanked us. We had put about half our stuff away when juts less then 5 min later another cop came by alone and started yelling at us to get moving. He yelled "YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN TOLD ONCE, GET GOING NOW!" He stopped right in front of us and kept looking at us. I asked if he would like something to drink or eat and he again yelled, this time saying "I WOULD LIKE YOU TO HURRY UP." I turned around and said to him, yes you are correct we were told once to leave but that was less then 5 min ago and if you were watching we are packing up. He then said "So why is the grill still out?" I said because it is cooling, do you want me to put a hot grill in the car and possibly cause a fire? With that he rode away. A few min later two of the original cops came by and asked if they could get another water if they were not already packed away. I gave them the water and told them what had happened. One of the cops turns to the other and say "That sounds like Smith, he's a real A$$hole." He turned back to me and said "We will be close by if he gives you any more trouble." We never saw him again and we were out of the lot a few min later.

They would be better off letting us know how much time we will get after the show so that we could plan accordingly. They could put signs up on the way in alerting you to how much time you will have at the end of the show. That way it would not be a surprise when they come by and tell you to pack it up.

i would say a 4 or 5pm start time would be perfect. i for one and all the people i was with really enjoyed the earlier time, as long as its a saturday show. as much as we thought we wouldnt we got back to the hotel in time to grab a bite to eat, swim in the pool, shower, and were able to hit the road the next morning early...correct me if i'm wrong but didnt jimmy used to do an early 3rd show time at Great Woods on Labor Day weekend?

Not sure where in the lot you were, but I also had a post party at my tailgate spot in the parking lot and there were about 15-20 of us having a good time for about 2 hours after the show. Grill was out and cranking out burgers and chicken. The cops didn't bother at all. At Gillette on the other hand, there was no problem with the cops, but the way they parked us left no room for tailgating. My pop up at Gillette was pretty much touching my car and the car behind me, whereas at GW, I had a whole aisle behind me AND in front of me to work with.

Oh, and it seems that I'm in the minority, but I wasn't a big fan of the 3pm start, maybe it's because my buddy had to work and we had to rush to get there for noon. Maybe a 6 or 7pm start, but not earlier than say 5.

Agreed, 10 minutes turns to 20 turns to an hour and they weren't sure what kind of weather was coming at us. I assumed from the git go once they moved the time up that they were going to be real interested in getting us all out as quickly as possible.

I seem to remember a concert at Grant Field in ATL in 1993 or 1994 maybe (have to look at my shirt to be sure) that started in the late afternoon. Or maybe we just got down there early because there was some sort of festival or other associated event going on.

It was the Primo Parrothead Party, they had the Margaritaville Area next to the Varsity. The Iguanas opened the show followed by Fats Domino and Jimmy came on around 7:30 pm. Great Show.
