Was Charlie Gibson "fair" with Gov. Sarah Palin?

Did you see the interview? Mr. Good Morning America has interviewed many people. Do you feel there was another Charlie Gibson behing the microphone or like Fox news, was he fair and balnaced?

All I've seen is what's been previewed on CNN ... on the two questions I saw, he seemed fair ... I'll be interested to see the whole interview ...

Watching The Weather Channel tonight. The plant in Spring closed at noon today and will re-open as weather permits. Told everyone to take care. A very good friend lives on a small island off Galveston that requires a ferry ride every day. Really concerned for him and his wife. Sounds like the storm surge and high tide will cause a butt load of trouble. Hope ya'll have a generator to keep the AC and the fridge running.

What do you mean by 'fair' in this context?

I watched the interview. Although she kept trying to answer many of the questions with irrelevant sound bites (she is a politician after all - business as usual in that regard), I'm getting a slightly better idea about what views Sarah Palin holds on the issues of the day.

With respect to the foreign policy questions, she seemed out of her depth. I don't believe she understood Gibson's question about the 'Bush Doctrine'. I don't think she even knew what the 'Bush Doctrine' was until Charlie Gibson stated it.

With regard to the situation in Georgia (the former Soviet Republic) she stated her belief that Georgia should be part of NATO, but appeared to have an 'oops' moment when Charlie Gibson pointed out that this would mean possibly going to war with Russia to enforce Georgian sovereignty. She didn't back away from the conclusion that, yes, we would likely have to go to war to safeguard Georgian sovereignty.

When asked what insight being Governor of Alaska has given her into recent Russian actions in South Ossetia (or the Tskhinvali region as the Georgians would have it) her response in part was "you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska".

It would apparently be OK with her if Israel attacked Iran's nuclear power facilities ("we can't second guess the steps they would take to defend themselves") in an application of the Bush Doctrine, ie preemptive attack against a possible threat, regardless of how problematic this would be for the future stability of the region. I think even the Bush administration (the originators of preemptive war) have been walking a different line on this question.

Asked why we were attacked on September 11, 2001 she responded in part "they do not believe in American ideals".

On the question of whether we have the right to cross the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan to attack Islamic extremists, with or without permission from the Pakistani government, she avoided answer directly but when pressed came up with "America has to exercise all options . . . we have got to have all options on the table". Action of this kind could cause the collapse of the Pakistani government and result in another country sunk into chaos and violence, except of course Pakistan actually DOES have weapons of mass destruction. She may want to temper her remarks if she gets elected Vice President of the United States in seven weeks.

Her general comments about reform of government make for some Reaganesque sound bites, but running Wasilla, Alaska is probably a bit different from helping to run a nation like this one.

But forget about her colorful days as mayor of Wasilla and the many inevitable contradictions between her 'private' life and the public pronouncements of the Republican party on a range of social issues.

We are finally getting some sense of this woman who would be Vice President and I see a problem here. We aren't watching an episode of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Affable host Jeff Foxworthy won't be there to encourage her when the tough questions come up.

I sort of admire her 'can do' attitude, but frankly, I think if she gets elected, they (McCain and friends) will feel compelled to keep her on a short leash and feed her lines. It's becoming clear to me that she was brought on the ticket to attract the McCain-shunning Evangelicals, pure and simple.

As far as Charlie Gibson is concerned, I wish he had been at least as 'fair' when Bush and the Republicans were whipping up war fever prior to invading Iraq. Back then, few in the main stream media even tried to question the faulty assumptions and misguided policies ('Bush Doctrine') of the current administration, unfortunately for all of us.

The function of a free press is to challenge the powerful, on our behalf - not work with them to keep us ignorant and chained.

I think Charlie Gibson was almost gentle with Ms. Palin, all things considered.

As expected, his bias came through loud & clear, but, to her credit, Gov. Palin did great with her answers.
I'd feel VERY comfortable with her as my Vice President, and, for that matter, I'd feel comfortable with her as my Commander-in-Chief.

And yes, Fox News is fair and balanced.
That's why I watch it.

I have rocks in my back yard more qualified to be Vice President than her. She actually thinks the earth is about 5,000 years old and Adam and Eve walked around with the dinosaurs! That about did it for me…

I thought the interview was tough, but fair. She needed to be asked tough questions. To me though, her answers sounded canned, like she was just reciting what she had been taught the last 7-10 days by the Bush advisers that were following her around, prepping her on foreign policy (true story). She clearly had no idea what the Bush Doctrine was. Many people don't, but someone who is running to be VP of the United States should know that.

I look forward to seeing more from the interview.

Joe Biden already stated (to Anderson Cooper sometime back) that HE had no idea what the Bush Doctrine was.
I thought THAT was odd, since, he's not only a candidate for Vice President, but a SITTING U.S. SENATOR.

I didn't see the interview but did she answer any questions by saying "that's above my pay grade" like Obama did a couple of weeks ago?

You'll have to prove to me where Joe Biden said that "he had no idea what the Bush Doctrine was". I just did a search and couldn't find that... though I did find this from December 2007.

And sure my mind is made up about who I am going to vote for... but I still look forward to seeing more from the interview.

Are you sure it was Biden who said that and not Neil Kinnock?

No but she did say that she has foreign policy experience with Russia because you can see Russia from Alaska.
