Zeppelin To Sail Without Plant?

Led Zeppelin is considering going on a reunion tour without former frontman Robert Plant, according to the Sun.
The paper claims Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham, the remaining members of the band, have given the singer an ultimatum to either join them or be replaced.
The story says they have been rehearsing at London’s Ritz Studio using stand-in vocalists. It quotes an unidentified source saying one of them – an American – has been so impressive the other band members are confident they could hit the road without their original frontman.
Plant, who has been working with U.S. singer Alison Krauss, hasn’t ruled out another reunion, but he has told GQ magazine that bureaucracy is what puts him off the idea.
“The endless paperwork was like nothing I’ve experienced before,” he told the U.K. style magazine. “I’ve kept every one of the e-mails that were exchanged before the concert and I’m thinking of compiling them for a book, which I feel sure would be hailed as a sort of literary version of Spinal Tap.” - John Gammon

I'll bet he's just holding out until the last bargaining minute.
Tickets would become Golden Tickets if suddenly he reconsiders at the "moment of reckoning".

I know I'd drop more than a couple bills to see them again.

I had heard he was going to do another album with Krauss and go back on the road with her. Which would throw a wrench into their plans...

My wife and a friend saw them this past summer and said it was incredible...

Even if he does join them, Jason Bonham is a replacement member for his dad. It would be like Julian Lennon taking over his dad's part in the Beatles, close but not the same.

Consider the source - The Sun. No matter - even if 'they' did go out they can't call it Led Zeppelin.

Ten months after playing their first full-length concert in almost three decades, members of legendary rock group Led Zeppelin [ tickets ] appear poised to mount a full-blown tour--with one catch: frontman Robert Plant won't be participating.

According to the BBC News, bassist John Paul Jones, while speaking at a guitar show in the UK, said that he, guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Jason Bonham (son of original Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980), plan to record and tour with a yet-to-be-named vocalist, and that the group is "trying out a couple singers."
"We want to do it," Jones reportedly said. "It's sounding great and we want to get on and get out there."

Jones went on to say that the group isn't looking for a Plant clone.

"It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band.

"There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be on board," he added.

Last December, Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham performed a one-off concert at London's O2 arena as part of a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, who founded the group's longtime label, Atlantic Records. The performance received high praise from fans, critics and other members of the music industry, and many felt the quartet would mount a reunion tour soon after.

However, despite the apparent demand for the group to hit the road, Plant instead opted to spend most of this year focusing on his collaborative album with Allison Krauss, "Raising Sand." The pair recently wrapped up their tour in support of the set.

According to Billboard, Page, Jones and Bonham have been rehearsing together in recent months in the hopes that Plant would ultimately sign on for a full-fledged reunion. Alter Bridge vocalist Myles Kennedy is rumored to be one of the singers in contention for the slot.

On Nov. 4, Rhino Records will mark Led Zeppelin's 40th anniversary with the release of "Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD," a limited-box set that will contain all 10 of the group's albums in mini-LP replicas featuring artwork from the original UK versions of the vinyl-LP sleeves. It's already not Led Zeppelin without John Bonham. As for what they call it, I'm pretty sure Jimmy Page owns the rights to the name. In regards to Plant & Krauss, anything can happen (and most likely will) but he recently issued a statement saying he wouldn't be touring for the next two years.

i think he's playing possum to drive up anticipation...and sponsorship costs... for the inevitable tour

I read in the paper this summer, Plant was already talking about doing another album with Allison Krauss.

Can't really fault a guy for wanting to do something different.

I've also read that Plant hopes to work with Krauss again and if nothing else, at least another Nashville based album with T Bone Burnett at the helm.

I'd love to see Zeppelin myself but I also admire Plant for following his own path. I'd like to think he's holding out as well but I honestly don't think it's for the money. If they wanted to do a big money cash-in tour they all could have done that years ago. All the reunions so far have been for some sort of charity (with the exception of the Atlantic Records shindig). most notably the most recent one which was done in memory of their dear friend Ahmet Ertegun. It's also worth nothing that Plant gave up his rights to royalties of Zeppelin songs several years back. I think he's truly just following his muse at this point. They're all multi-millionaires so I really don't think it's about the money.

I couldn't agree more! I also think this why this won't happen. I believe that Plant has integrity, and creative energy not to live in the past. He's a musician and keeps moving forward. Why ruin such a great thing just for the sake of "cashing in"?

I heard a rumor that Steven Tyler is eyeing this role. Also mentioned is the singer of Alter Bridge (don't know his name).

My understanding is no one can use the name Led Zeppelin unless they are all in it together. So Jimmy has to come up with a different name. I'm guessing something along the lines of Hammer Of The Gods.

First of all the project Page, Jones and Jason Bonham have been working on was never even going to be called Led Zeppelin to start with. Despite the fact that both Page and Jones have addressed this in interviews the press still insists upon referring to it as "Led Zeppelin". I've noticed the same thing happening with the upcoming tour by "the Dead". The press keeps referring to it as a "Grateful Dead" tour and as a "reunion" despite the fact that the surviving members of the Grateful Dead have performed together countless times since Garcia died as "The Other Ones" and "The Dead'.

There's not even a hint of truth to that as Plant, Page and Jones have performed as Led Zeppelin several times since John Bonham died. The first time was at Live Aid with Phil Collins and the late Tony Thompson (Chic) on drums. They also performed at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert with Jason Bonham. Though it wasn't a public performance, they also played at Jason Bonham's wedding several years ago with Jason on drums. Most recently they played again with Jason on drums at the O2 Arena in London last year in memory of Atlantic Records founder and their dear friend the late Ahmet Ertegun.

There's not a single quote in that article from Jimmy Page saying that, the only quotes are from Jimmy Page's manager. Not to mention, there was never going to be a Led Zeppelin tour without Plant anyway. As I mentioned in my previous post Page said they had no plans to use the Led Zeppelin name. The plan was to record new material with a new singer and then tour behind it but it would not be called Led Zeppelin.

This is the truth!! That said I have seen Plant a few times on his own and very much enjoy alot of what he has done. I also really liked the first "Firm" album that Jimmy did and loved his solo album, "Outrider". Saw him when he toured for Outrider and it was just incredible!! To be able to see them all would be cool but I also agree with others here that Plant seems to have just moved on for the most part. Money is not a driving force and without John Bonham I think it still misses something. Kinda like the Who. They just aren't the same with Keith. Enjoyable...but not the real deal.
