Sales numbers in the 1970s and 80s were based on shipments but the sales of the 1990s are more accurate. So Jimmy has sold over 4 million copies of records in the 1990s alone, the box set has actually had one million people buy it, I think that's right, I know it has sold close to one million copies, which means 4 million records sold? I can't remember now. Fruitcakes was a million seller, and Barometer Soup and Banana Wind combined sold over a million, plus Beach House On The Moon and T,T,S combined probably sold close to one million. Include what was supposedly sold in the 1970s, which I believe is around 4 million, and that's up to about 10 million. In the 1980s he might have sold, with all 9 albums combined, I would guess around 4 million. So roughly 14 million? Over 30 years. He doesn't have 33 albums, I don't know WHY he keeps saying that. Now these are just my guesses. have nothing to prove anything of what I've said other than what I can remember of his certified gold and platinum albums list that I saw somewhere.

I always wondered about that myself... I figured he's either counting the Box Set as 4 ... or he is adding the 3 Margaritaville Café disc he appears on to his catalog. (or ... his math just "suks" )

25 original releases, including Rancho Deluxe - which I know is a soundtrack but a soundtrack is an album and he wrote all the music so it is his album - although I have read CILCIA called his seventh album - but Jimmy himself has counted Rancho Deluxe as an album! - excluding live albums, greatest hits and any compilations

34 releases on Barnaby/Verese; ABC/Dunhill - which got swallowed by -
MCA; Margaritaville/MCA; Margaritaville/Island; Mailboat, not counting double albums as doubles, box set as 4 and including hits and EP and excluding American Storyteller et al - just 34 named releases

So there you have it. When people talk about how many albums they have, I've always been lead to believe that they mean albums that have been recorded in a studio, which means compilations of any sort and live albums are not in their count since it means original albums. Hell, if you were to count how many albums The Rolling Stones have including compilations and live albums, AUGH! It must be over 40 just in their names alone, yet alone double albums.

I hope this sheds some light for anyone who's interested in this kind of worthless knowledge as well as provides ample entertainment!

On a related note (but sorry, I don't have the answer to the actual question at hand)...there was one year back in the eighties when Jimmy Buffett had higher MERCHANDISE sales than Madonna and (dare I say it out loud?) michael jackson. That's back when both Madonna and michael jackson were both selling BOATLOADS of records and drawing super dooper size crowds at concerts. I just thought it was cool factoid.

You might remember a funny thing that happened here not too long ago: Somebody revived a thread that was about a year or two old. The thread was a "wish list" of cities for the upcoming tour.
