One minute, they’re nice, normal people. The next, they’re frothing at the mouse.

“It’s mind-boggling the things people will say and even the things I will say,” says Catherine McIntyre, a 38-year-old medical billing specialist from Houston. “People who’d never say something horrible in real life will do it again and again and again online. It’s like the behavior of crowds, or those mass beatings where no one gets blamed because everyone’s at fault.”

Actually, I try to control myself here because everyone here is so civil...but put me on the phone with an uninvited caller or a customer service issue and...well it isn't pretty.

I don't think I've ever said anything here or anywhere else online that I wouldn't say to someone's face. In fact, I've probably said worse to their face. But I'm such a lovable old goat I get away with it.

Similiar thing tends to happen to people when they switch from "driver" to "pedestrian" (I'm guilty of this on occasion). When in driver-mode it's "Hey idiot! Use the crosswalk!" and "Move it people!".

Once parked and outside the car it becomes "Hey! I'm walking' here!". Complete reversal.

I think I'm about the same in person. My voice might be a little higher in person. That's about all, though.
