McCain/Palin campaign insists on a canned debate

Post by The Lost Manatee »

Reported in the NY Times and picked up by the AP:

From the NY TIMES,

"At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

The wrangling was chiefly between the McCain-Palin camp and the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which is sponsoring the forums.

Commission members wanted a relaxed format that included time for unpredictable questioning and challenges between the two vice-presidential candidates. On Wednesday, the commission unanimously rejected a proposal sought by advisers to Ms. Palin and Senator John McCain of Arizona, the Republican presidential nominee, to have the moderator ask questions and the candidates answer, with no time for unfettered exchanges. Advisers to Mr. Biden say they were comfortable with either format."

This begs the question are we, the voters going to get to see what Gov. Palin's views are and what she is capable of at some point in this campaign? I'm very disappointed in the McCain Palin campaign for changing from an open format to one that is canned. I feel like this debate is no longer about informing the public but rather to be a sound bite generating get together.

I'd be trying to shield her too if I was the McCain campaign.

I didn't watch it, but she was interviewed by Katie Couric tonight.

I'm sorry ... that's funny ... I don't care where you're from ... and I'm a former beauty pageant contestant ...

McCain did not vet her ... they picked her to energize their base and appeal to Hillary supporters ... she is in way over her head ... if all you need is soundbites and scripted speeches, she's your girl ...

The conservatives in my office and in my life are having serious second thoughts ... one of them even told me today that he was voting for Obama because Palin was a "loose cannon."

She may get some one-liners in Friday night, but I think the damage is done ... she might have had a chance in the national arena if they had brought her along for a few years ... if they had let her give the opening speech at the national convention and let her get her feet wet before throwing her into the deep end of the pool.

because the OTHER side is SO much better

Did Obama really announce Joe Biden as his V.P.? Joe who? From Dela-where? Is it possible that the man who claims to represent change picked a 35 year United States Senator? A member of the ultra-establishment "Beltway Insiders" boys club for the past 35 years? The same Joe Biden who has been in office longer than half of all Americans have been alive? The same Biden who voted for the Iraq War? The same Biden who complimented Obama by describing him as "clean" earlier in the primaries? The same Biden who stated in a Democratic debate that Obama was inexperienced and not ready to serve? The same Biden who said in response to a tough reporter's question, "My I.Q. is higher than yours"? The same Biden who claimed to have earned three college degrees, but in fact only earned two? The same Biden who claimed to have gotten a full scholarship through law school, when in fact he didn't?

Could it possibly be the same Biden that was forced out of the Presidential race in '87 because he PLAGIARIZED speeches? Just what we need in America- another thief in politics. Is it possible that Obama's advisors are too young to know that Biden plagiarized speeches in '87? This is Obama's version of change? Well a Vice Presidential candidate who admits stealing speeches from others is definitely a change. What's the new Democrat Slogan? “We'll either bring you change- or steal it from others.”

Obama can't be too proud of his pick either. He announced it on a Saturday. Strange. Mysterious. Inexplicable. I've been in the media business my entire life. Nothing of any importance is ever announced on a weekend. EVER. Unless it's bad or embarrassing news- and you don't want the media to notice. Good news, groundbreaking news, or exciting news gets announced on a Monday. If Biden was "Saturday news" what does that say about Obama's faith in Biden?

Uh, yeah!
I think America's faith in "competent political leadership" died the day WOODROW WILSON became president.
