Jerry Jeff Walker and Guy Clark both recorded better versions than Jimmy.

I haven't heard Guy Clark's original....
but Jimmy's version is one of my recent favorites, and I'll go with his because it sounds like a Buffett story

For some reason I really don't like Jimmy's version at all. When it comes on the iPod I skip it.

As much as I love Guy Clark, his
version just doesn't grab me.
I really like Jerry Jeff's version, but given the choices above, I'm going with Jimmy's version.

With all due respect to Jimmy, because I think his version is good, I feel Guy's version is the best.
Guy's version takes me down to Rockport where I've seen a lot of boats being built and reminds me of how Guy "crafts" his songs.
From Guy Clark:
"All of my songs are personal, some are historical or chronological narrative; others are more impressionistic. But that doesn't make one song truer than another. They're all true--it's all stuff that has happened to me, either literally or metaphorically."
From the Boats To Build liner notes and Ben Sandmel, a New Orleans based drummer, journalist and folk lore researches:
Besides mastering the intricasies of guitar-making, Clark worked in a shipyard, and various aspects of the experience are reflected in several songs, including "Boats To Build," "Blowin' Like A Bandit" and "The South Coast of Texas."
"It was a summer job during high school," he recalls. "They were building the last big wooden shrimp boats that were made before they switched over to steel. I was really impressed by the pride that the carpenters took in their craftsmanship, and their attitude that 'faster is not always better.' When you're building with wood every little piece is different, and you have to put more care into it than just working by the hour. I try to take that same approach with my songs, as far as quality taking precedence over quantity.."
Guy was born in West Texas but moved to Rockport, on the Texas Gulf Coast, when he was in the sixth grade. He learned how to play guitar from his father's law partner, Lola Bonner. When he heard her play he went down to Mexico and bought a cheap guitar and learned everything he could from her.
Santa, thanks for choosing a great song again.

Guy Clark, even if he did have a cold the night I saw him do it.

Guy Clark, since the first time I heard it.
I played it for a friend's father the Summer I bought the CD....He was a Master Boatbuilder.... ( Wooden Boat Builder...He'd been featured in "Wooden Boat" magazine several times.....Arno Day.)
We were on Little Deer Isle, in Maine having a lobstah boil.... and I played it for him, and he asked me to play it again....Unusual, as he was a man of few words.....Very few.
He smiled, and got that rare twinkle in his eye....and later asked his daughter to get him a copy of that CD.....

Neat story, Lulu!
(I just watched
Message In A Bottle so I read all about the wooden boats in the movie. Read about the Arapaho sometime if you get the chance. It's a Concordia Yawl #85.)
