I'll be SO happy when the day comes when all parents can send their little rug rats to PRIVATE schools, and the money wasted on public education goes to something REALLY useful.

No one said you have to be an Ivy-leaguer to do well for yourself. However, I am a firm believer in education. Entrepreneurship, hard work, and education are what have made this country great.

But these days, the public education system, ESPECIALLY the colleges and universities, are nothing more than liberal & socilaist indoctrination centers.
Being run by the phoney-baloney, plastic banana, dope smoking, maggot infested socialist rejects from my era-the 1960's.

If you want to fix education, as with most over government, get the politicians out of the operations.

They should be making the decisions on direction and funding not day to day operations.

I can't argue that.
I do get upset over what they're actually TEACHING the kids, however.
But I'd never say they don't CARE for their students.
Unless one of them happens to think like I do, anyway.

Mr. Mojito is a teacher ... at the same school for 20 years ... had his share of National Merit Scholars, Air Force Academy Graduates, Law School Review Editors, and several State Spelling and Vocabulary Team and Individual championships ... most of his colleagues are committed to their students and spend countless hours after school helping their kids. The kids come back while in college and praise their "small school" education, giving credit to him and the others who taught them for 12 years.

No Child Left Behind has forced them to "teach to the test," but he and his colleagues really do their best to make sure learning is going on in their classrooms.

I pray that whoever is the new president takes a long, hard look at what NCLB has done to dismantle the classroom and disrupt the entire educational system.

My mother was a public school teacher for 30 years. She worked with kids who were learning disabled and also had problems outside of school (ie broken homes, poverty, etc).

I pray that whoever is the new president takes a long, hard look at what NCLB has done to dismantle the classroom and disrupt the entire educational system.

My sister is a teacher as well and says similar things. But there were kids leaving high schools with a diploma who could not read, write or do simple math. Not every kid, nor every school. The states could not or would not do anything. The teachers union also refused to do anything, refused to fire ineffective teachers. I agree NCLB is draconian in it's measurements, but something had to be done. Maybe it will serve as a spur to everyone in education to retrain or remove ineffective teachers and insure that public education is not simply daycare for school age kids.

Seriously, Garry? What good teachers at good schools are teaching is critical thinking. I know you work in a university town, but spend some time on a variety of campuses and dealing with a variety of colleges (even that left wing alma mater of mine just down the road from you) as I do, and you will see incredible research, thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking at most of them.

I agree with you ... but NCLB - as it stands now - requires that ALL children are at grade level ... including those with severe learning deficits like mental retardation and cognitive development issues ... my husband's not against mainstreaming, but there needs to be a cut-off point. It's hard to teach when the IQs of your students have such a dramatic range.

At one time, I covered the school board for the paper. They struggled with this issue and agonized over how to make sure everyone had a quality education.

It is a puzzlement.

With all due respect, how much of what you claim is material that you've researched independently after hearing Rush and Sean tell you about it? I'm hearing generalizations and namecalling; I'm not seeing independently-verified facts. "I saw it on FOX news" doesn't count.

Whatever happened to the relatively civil discussion on this thread five or six pages ago? People were disagreeing, but they weren't calling each other names and cutting each other down personally.
