About 620,000 soldiers died in the Civil War. The same percentage of the population today would equate to 6 million dead Americans..... :o

Editor's note: Orson Scott Card is a Democrat and a newspaper columnist, and in this opinion piece he takes on both while lamenting the current state of journalism.

An open letter to the local daily paper — almost every local daily paper in America:

Actually that's not true:

Here's the link to the article - http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/08/ ... ffect.html

"On average, Barack Obama overperformed the Pollster.com trendline by 3.3 points on election day."
Thanks for the correction. I was wrong.

Again, here's the FactCheck.org article on Obama's birth certificate that I believe ETP posted:

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008 ... e_usa.html

"We beg to differ. FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate. We conclude that it meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. We have posted high-resolution photographs of the document as "supporting documents" to this article. Our conclusion: Obama was born in the U.S.A. just as he has always said."

And if you don't know who FactCheck.org is, they are an independent fact checking organization. Both campaigns often cite them, and Dick Cheney even cited them in the 2004 VP debate.

That article was published July 10th. The FactCheck article, with photos of the birth certificate including the raised seal, was published August 21, 2008.

That one skit there is a classic.

It was also a pivotal moment, as the parody skewered the press' bias toward Obama,
and for a short time, Hillary rebounded. But, the momentum didn't hold...

I think the same can be said for the current climate. SNL has become an effective barometer for the electorate.
When Sarah Palin was introduced, their campaign was re-invigorated and the numbers reflected an impressive bounce, but then came the season return of SNL and Tina Fey.
There is no denying that the roasting of Palin, reflecting her somehow "folksy" character, has been the measure that America has now decided to judge her.
She has done too little to offset the impressions left by her SNL caricature... 8)

I don't think SNL is the reason that the majority of Americans feel she is unqualified to be president. Palin has said a lot of dumb things that make her look less than knowledgeable on the issues.

When SNL spoofed the Katie Couric interview, they lifted entire portions of the transcript verbatim and used them in the skit and got laughs out of them.

You're right... it is not THE reason.
But it has "lifted the mirror" more than her other excerpts,
and when coupled with the laughter response, it certainly has been helping to sway those who may not have had a sure opinion.
Her positives have been dropping steadily, along with negatives rising, since the SNL season premiere in mid-Sept., and, excuse the pun, it's been snowballing ever since
