Lancaster, PA - Gettysburg

Post by jackiesic »

Okay, not the most exciting of destinations. Am looking for ideas on what to do.
Will be there in November so I know Hershey Park is closed.

Are you kidding me? OMG I love Gettysburg! :o :o :o

When in November? Nov 22 weekend is Remembrance Day weekend; all kinds of stuff going on in Gettysburg. If you're staying *in* Gettysburg and don't have a place yet, try to book a room at Doubleday Inn bed & breakfast (http://www.doubledayinn.com). Christine and Todd will give you all sorts of ideas and the inn is fantastic. It's also on the battlefield and there are all sorts of stories about people seeing ghosts there. I didn't see any, but I did wake up to the sound of a ticking pocketwatch, and my watch doesn't tick. :o

Do the driving tour of the battlefield, and go to the new visitor center. Plan on at least 1-2 hours for the visitor center.

For dinner, I love O'Rorke's Pub, on Steinwehr (sp?) Ave. Great pub food. For breakfast (if you don't do a B&B), The Avenue on Steinwehr. YUMMY.

If you really hate history it might not be the most interesting place, but with even a passing interest in the momentous battle of Gettysburg, you can see some great stuff! (And for some of us, we can spend DAYS there and not get enough.... )

LANCASTER
Just south of Lancaster (Strausburg?) there is a real steam train you can ride. There is also a nearby restaurant where you can eat in a Little Red Caboose (And spend the night in one, if you wish). Also there is the Sight& Sound Theater: they do biblicly-themed pageants (not much evangelizing, but HUGE effects). We watched the Nativity show last year and it was quite dramatic.
In Lancaster, we usually eat at least one meal at the Texas Roadhouse steak place. Sure, it's a chain restaurant, but you can throw your peanut shells on the floor.

GETTYSBURG
Most of my ideas have already been mentioned, but if you have some time to kill (and just want some meditation time to honor our forebears) Devil's Den makes a nice spot to settle in for some heavy thinking.
On the other hand, the Lincoln Diner serves up a decent meal, and an even better dessert.
Head south on Rt 15 to see my alma mater. Mount Saint Mary's has one of the most beautiful campuses I ever got drunk on. (But seriously, a walk up the mountain to The Grotto will put you in a spiritual place, drunk or not.) Also, Stavros Pizza will make you forget all about your favorite place back home.

Don't forget to stop at a roadside stand for apples, apple-butter, shoefly pie, honey, or whatever floats your boat.

PM me for more. I could go on for hours.

Devil's Den is creepy. Totally creepy, even in broad daylight.... *shudder*..... But Dave's right; it's a good meditation place. As it Little Round Top, up above Devil's Den.

I'll second the Lincoln Diner. Most excellent, and open 24/7.

Gettysburg is the most amazing, powerful place I have ever been.

I'm a history geek, so I loved it.......but seriously, tour the battlefields....it was one of the most emotional experiences I've ever had. The spirits there are so strong.....sounds weird, but I'll just never forget the feeling.

Oh, and they have a kickass harley shop, too!

York, PA isn't too far......tour the harley finish plant!

Thank you!!! I especially appreciate places to eat. Nothing wrose than spending hard-earned money on lousy food.
Guess I'd rather be going to Florida or the islands. That's all.
