Nadirah's CD Release Celebration was a Knockout!!

Post by Tiki Bar »

Nadirah Shakoor's "Nod to the Storyteller" CD Celebration on Friday night at Margaritaville was phenomenal! Talk about high energy, smiles, and goosebumps! :D :D And from the audience, it truly seems that she's not only surrounded herself with amazing talent, but with love as well.

It's just heartwarming to see the admiration between her and her bandmates... Coral Reefers as well as Outside Art. She performed many of the songs from the new CD, songs from her previously released "Obsessed With Peace", and a few rocking familiar covers, including "Can't Get Next to You". It was her big night, yet she took the time to showcase her supporting cast on many occasions. Coral Reefers Ralph MacDonald, Mac McAnally, Robert Greenidge, Tina Gullickson, and John Lovell. I didn't see them from my vantage point in front of the stage, but Mr Utley and Peter Mayer were there showing her support as well.

She introduced the rest of her Outside Art band many times throughout the show too, and featured her backup vocalists on some songs. I can't remember their names, and I'm not having any luck with Google, but if I find them, I'll share them. The 22 year old female backup did a nice rendition of "Walking in Memphis". Nadirah told a story of how when Club Trini used to play before the shows, this girl was there with her parents, and said she liked to sing, so they let her. And I'm pretty sure she said she even got up on stage with Jimmy to sing Cheeseburger in Paradise. Pretty darn cool!

She also gave props to Mike Ramos for his help. He was there to introduce her and the show.

Also noteworthy on BN, Nadirah told the audience how she first asked Savannah Jane for her song recommendations, and then Jimmy helped her narrow that list down. And after that, how she then turned to ask the fans on BuffettNews, but that the first person she asked was balcony girls, who's right up here in the front, and turning 61 on Tuesday. Thank you Cindi for your love and support. (Or something like that.) Again, pretty darn cool!

A friend of Nadirah's, Ronald I think his name was, was at the show painting a nice sized (probably 4'x5') portrait of the inside photo from Nod to the Storyteller.

from Reeferette Nadirah Shakoor MySpace:

Image

They sold raffle tickets for his rendition that turned out beautiful, and donated proceeds to a Las Vegas charity (food depository I believe). The winner was a woman from a town that I thought was in England and started with a W, but it's not coming to me either. Here's where I should say that drinking didn't have anything to do with the memory loss - I was drinking ice water!)

Nadirah has such a stage presence - soooo beautiful, soooo radiant, soooo captivating, soooo expressive... and what a powerful voice... and "voice"! :) She told great stories, and the recurring theme for the evening was PEACE.

Songs I remember her playing, in no particular order:

Creola
Why You Wanna Hurt My Heart
Makin' Music For Money
La Vie Dansante (featuring Tina Gullickson)
Give Henry the Receipt
Let Him Go
Margaritaville
Volcano
When The War Is Over
Wonder Why We Ever Go Home
(Let Peace Be) Just a Breath Away (she reached the mic out to BG to sing a line on that one!)
Obsessed With Peace
Walking in Memphis
Can't Get Next to You

Oh, and it really was a knockout performance! It landed Cindi out cold for a few minutes in the middle of the 2nd set... she fainted for some reason - probably because it was just that good! A nearby BNer whose name I never got summoned security, who tended to her, and got her out of the puddles of who knows what on the floor, and into a chair til she felt ok enough to walk. Scary! But she seems to be ok since.

CONGRATULATIONS NADIRAH!! :D :D

It occurred to me while driving... Yorkshire

More thoughts:

Another song that she did: Happy Birthday to her aunt, and a cool version I must say!

Nadirah asked the crowd if we knew who produced the CD, and not a whole lot of hands went up. She told everyone that it was Mac, thanked him, and told him she couldn't have done it without him.

A team of Stan and two other concert videographers were all on hand recording the show.

There was a photographer there, who I'm pretty sure was Kibru Senbetta, who gets much credit for the pics on the Reeferette Nadirah Shakoor site (including the one I posted above), and in the cd liner notes.

I wonder who Nadirah's 'costume designer' is? Her outfits are completely stunning and form fitting! Does Nadirah do them herself? Does a family member or friend? A combination? Or 'other'? Either way, they're spectacular! (Ooops - see in the liner notes: Wardrobe Stylist: Helen Hiatt - so know at least part of the answer! :) )

And side note: Before the show, there were a couple videos played on the screens from the Freddy and the Fishsticks Margaritaville Cafe show in NOLA earlier this year: one of the Ilo Ferreira songs, and L'air De La Louisiane... AWESOME to see!! :D :D

I've heard Jimmy mention a costume designer named Helen Hiatt (sp?) a few times. I don't know if she designed stuff for the whole band or if she was just around when Heather and Jules (and later Louisa) were in the band and only did the dancers' outifts.

Yes it really was me. I could not believe it and was really lucky. I had bought some raffle tickets and my friend Vinnie from California who we met at the Paris show shared tickets with me and bought 3 times more than me. She really wanted to win the painting and gave me her tickets while she went for a meal at the Flamingo and said she trusted me with her tickets. When they called the number out I had all the stack of tickets and my ticket actually won the prize. Hubby had already told her if I won I would give her the prize (oh dear) as we would never be able to get it to England. We went to the Flamingo where they were eating at 2 am and she screamed when she saw the painting. I gave it to her as they are hoping to buy a bar in St Maarten and will hang the picture on the wall of the bar. We will be able to visit the bar and everyone from the US will be able to see this painting and the story behind it. Hope everyone agrees that the painting would be better on a bar wall for everyone to see than on the wall in our house in England. I have not taken any money for the painting and people stopped me wanting it. The painting is beautiful and the night at Margaritaville was fantastic and so is Nadirah. l

YAY!!!! If you saw my subsequent post, the Yorkshire occurred to me a bit later. I wondered if it was 'our' Yorkshire PH!?! Mega congratulations to you on the win, and mega kudos to you on unselfishly giving it a 'good home' with your friend!! :D :D By any chance could you post a picture of it, or email me a pic so I can post it? And do you have the artist's name? I'd love him to get proper credit - it really was beautiful, and done in so little time!

The artist has put his name on the back of the picture so I will email Vinnie and ask her the name of him and also email you a photo. When I get my 100 plus photos on my computer I will try and put the best ones on Buffett News. I have some nice photos of the painting. Vinnie was the lady with the large hat on and there is a photo on Buffett News taken at Vegas in 2006 with caption My Cousin Vinnie. It is so nice that we made friends at the Paris Show and we will now be friends for life. People seeing this photo when it gets to St Maarten will bring more recognition for the artist, Nadirah and Jimmy (if he needs any more).

Cool, Yorkshire! :D Thanks!

Another thought as my lack-of-sleep-haze clears...

At the show Friday night, Nadirah's rendition of Aaron Neville's "Why You Wanna Hurt My Heart" was one particularly powerful and passionate performance!!!! I think she had everyone in the place begging her for mercy and forgiveness for doing her wrong! I can't adequately describe it, but DAMN! :o :D :o :D

22 Year Old Singer on Friday Night

Post by shrimperdon »

Just to let you all know...the young lady singing back-up with Nadirah and also doing "Walking in Memphis" name is Mallory Escott. She is originally from Danbury, CT but now resides in Westhampton, NY on Long Island. She should be recognized by her many show appearances when Club Trini used to play before the actual concerts starting at the age of ten(boy do I really miss them performing!). You are correct about singing Cheeseburger with Jimmy. That occurred in Manassas VA. in 2001. She also has had the chance to be in the opening number in the "Carnival" tour in Great Woods, MA. You will have to forgive me on the date of this. After all I am that old.. :D she is also an actor and dancer (appearing on TV and on small parts on the big screen and just flat out loves to perform for anyone. Look for her in the upcoming NBC show "Kings". You can also contact her if you wish on her "Meet the PHlockers" home page. ... and if you haven't figured it out yet, I am also a very proud Dad. I love you Mallory!!
