Trust me there is. I feel as if my computer may be dying in a matter of hours or days and no longer weeks or months and if I can't save my writing, then nothing's worth saving.
Do you have a separate hard drive? If not, consider buying one tomorrow to move your files onto. You can get a decent sized one at Staples, Circuit City, etc for under $100. You might want to consider not turning off your computer until you can off load your data files.

Or do you have a thumb drive you can save your writing to?
When you are in safe mode a lot of your applications simply will not work. I think the best thing is to do what Jen says. If it does crap out on you take it to a repair person that can do disk recovery. Sometimes files can be obtained by a pro.
I have a friend who's a computer software whiz so hopefully he can help me tomorrow. And no, I don't have any back up hard drives, cause you know that would be the responsible thing to do, and, well, this is me we're talking about....

That's odd, I always thought people said you were responsible. For a lot of things. :-?

JUST SAY NO TO HP.....after a forty minute frustrating phone call with a guy that sounded like Hadji from Johnny Quest....HP is NOT fixing my computer in SPITE of the fact that the previous gentleman said, NO PROBLEM, we will fix at no charge to you....when I argued with them (using only nice words and a calm voice, I promise)...I was told "Have a nice day and thank you for calling HP"....

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR......

Ryan.....do they get to pick?
It's frustrating....I have no doubt that he knows what he's talking about....but when there is a basic inability to communicate....it really doesn't matter....... :x :x :x :x :x

i would be interested in knowing more about these. i've only heard of 2 or 3 in the mac security world. and they were more theoretical than actually damaging.
most that I know that are public were published by SANS and were via safari...with companies pushing for SaaS (sw as a service) more and more products will be delivered via the internet so a well protected OS that can separate its internet browsing/applications from the system browsing/applications will benefit everyone

JACK!!!!
SHUT IT DOWN NOW!!!!!!

Once the hard drive starts acting up you have a very finite number of times/amount of time before it self destructs!!!!!!! Go get a hard drive and back up you files ASAP!!!!!! And with what ever computer you wind up with use the external hard drive as your safety and back up your files once a week/month/whatever your comfortable with.....External Hard drives have gotten really cheap in the last 6 months.....I saw a 500Gb drive at Costco for $69.00.......

In safe mode Windows doesn't load device drivers, so windows is trying to use a generic driver to run the CD-R. Won't work. You need a USB external drive to back up your files. Use a USB on the front of the case since they are usually driven directly off the motherboard. USBs on the backof the case might be PCI cards requiring drivers that won't load.

Next thought: If the external drive requires software to be installed it might not work. You might have to go with a USB Flash drive. They use the generic USB driver in windows in combination with a self-contained onboard driver. 32 GB is under $100 and will probably hold your really important stuff.

Other option: if your internet is working properly find our how much space your ISP provides for online storage as part of you monthly fee. If possible temporarily rent more space from them, or take advantage of numerous online data storage sites for a short term rental.

Good luck!

FWIW, my oldest keet has a Lenovo(IBM) laptop that she hasn't been able to kill in 3 years despite her best efforts. The thing looks like it's been through a war and runs like a top.

I don't think there is a usb on the front of the case. I know that I plug my printer into the back and that also when i do I get a message saying "This device could work better if it is plugged into a---something, more powerful usb? higher power one?--but when I look for it my laptop is so old that there is no faster or more powerful option.

Its probably telling you that it will run better with a USB 2.0 connection....means you have an old laptop......ST had a good idea if you can dump your files into an online file storage and pick them up later or just simply use the online storage as your back up drive to safeguard your data in the future....

What if I emailed them to myself, opened them on another computer and backed them up there? If I go into safe mode with networking, will that allow me to access the internet?

(And I'm sure by now most of you are scratching your heads saying "Is it all right to tell this guy he's a moron with computers?" Trust me, I already know that.   )

You can try that but you need to send seperate complete files and go and choose them = time consuming and depending on your provider they may limit the size of the message and attachments as it might look like a virus package being sent....best bet (cleanest/fastest) would be to talk to your provider about backing up your files on line through their storage...you probably already have some amount of storage avalible....second choice would be to get that external hard drive...BUT if your USB ports aren't working (doesn't matter if it is USB 1.0 or USB 2.0) even that may not work....3rd choice is to take the laptop with you to the computer store and have them transfer your files to the new 'puter you buy...should only take an hour or so...... :D :D :D :D
But....not to panick you, but you need to get that data transfered asap......recovering data from a crashed Hard drive can be done...but it is $$$$ and isn't 100%........ :o :o :o

Once you have a MAC you'll never go back. It's my third year on a laptop and a desktop and I'm still happy as a clam. Buy the extended service.....you can't beat their phone help, (I've only had to call them twice in three years but get this, they answer right away, speak english with no accent and are actually in the continental US......wow, service, what a concept.)

Call the guys who provide you with your internet service and/or your email service (for me in the Seattle area it is Qwest). Talk to them and see what your service provides......and ask how to upload it....... :-? :D
