Philly?
I am thinking about making a last minute trip to Philly to watch the Navy/Army game on December 6. Any suggestions on where I can stay close to Lincoln Field that will not cost me an arm and a leg and is safe.

Looks like the only way to get tickets now is through the dreaded ticket scalpers err brokers.OceanCityGirl wrote:I'd love to get tips on getting tix to this game. My grandfather and uncles were WWII vets who lived in philly. Every year somebody would bring tix to the house for them so they would pick one of us to go.

Some Hotel ideas, etc.
If you want to stay close, like walking distance to the stadium, the the Holiday Inn is your place, however not real cheap. It's walking distance to the stadium.

And if you want to go cheap, then go to this place, but you will have to cab it to and from.

Chickie and Pete's is a great sports bar and you can spend some time before game, about 1 and 1/2 mile from stadium and they have a shuttle to get you to the game, too. So, if you stay out by the airport go there, and hang out before the game. If you go there, get the fries
(old bay seasoning and melted provolone on the side.) YUM

I am betting Holiday Inn stadium is booked...a few years ago my friend Jeannie and i went to see Bon Jovi at the Wachovia center...same night as the Army/Navy game...we ended up staying in the heart of Philly and taking a taxi! good luck Greg!

Can't help on the hotels unless you gave me a specific one and then I could tell you what the neighborhood is like. Agree though on Chickie and Pete's. I would love to go but am not able to pay the high scalper prices. I always mean to join the boosters and get tix for this game and forget until it's too late.

My grandparents and aunt and uncle lived next door to each other with an adjoining door. One was army one was navy. This game was a big family thing as long as they were with us. I'll watch and cheer for my late grandfather and uncle, one on each side, but I'm partial to army for my g'father. I do want to take my sons one year though, in person.

If I do it I'll be driving so I do not mind if I have to stay farther away from the stadium as long as it is safe and as inexpensive as possible.

Nope. How far is Cherry Hill from the stadium. Is public transportation available to the stadium from there?flipflopgirl wrote:diverg wrote:Just checked online for microtel and no rooms available during the Army/Navy game.docandjeanie wrote:Some Hotel ideas, etc.

Our public transportation is bad in South Jersey. I would guess there is something from Cherry Hill but it will be spotty and might get you to philly but not the stadium. It might take longer but you might do better in Atlantic City because you can get on the train. Again, not sure if it will get you to the stadium though.

Hey Greg, in Essington (small suburb of Philly)There is a Ramada, a Motel 6, a Red Roof Inn, a Comfort Inn and a Holiday Inn. Direct access to I95 and close enough to the Stadium for inexpensive taxi ride, less than 10 min away. There is a Quality Inn in Lester, not very good reviews. A Howard Johnson's in Springfield, about 7-8 mi away from the stadium. Whatever you do, DO NOT STAY IN CHESTER!!!!!
BTW the Ramada is showing availability on that weekend for $99.

I like all of the ideas that Irish Pirate has, the ramada is a good choice and a short cab ride. Let me know if you are coming, we would love to have a drink.diverg wrote:Just checked online for microtel and no rooms available during the Army/Navy game.docandjeanie wrote:Some Hotel ideas, etc.

Cherry Hill has "decent" transit options - if you don't mind driving SOME (that's my beef, if we trek into the city, we're usually drinking, and I don't want to drive at all).
You would take Patco (we usually go from Woodcrest; what you take would depend on hotel) to the 12th/13th and Walnut stop http://www.ridepatco.org/ and transfer to the Broad Street Subway line to the last stop, Pattison. It's a short walk.
It's easier - and less stressful - than driving and the PATCO runs all night, so you won't miss the last train home. I Will. Not. Drive. to the stadium! Too much a hassle to get out of - last time I did it was a sixers game and I was 60 minutes until I was out of a lot.
Hotwire a room in philly and you can jump on the broad street line easily. If you stay in a philly suburb with public transit, you can take the subway from Suburban Station (but be warned, suburbs and weekends often have shady transit schedules). I wouldn't suggest the Holiday Inn right at the stadium - overpriced for what you get, especially as easy as the subway is.
We went a couple of years back and scalped tickets for about $15 each, lower level, 30 yard line.

Anywhere off off Route 295 in the Cherry Hill / Mt. Laurel area is only 15 min. from the staduim. I work right off of 295 at the intersection of Route 73 and there are at least 15 hotels here plus tons of bars and restaurants. These are mostly used by buisness travelers so weekends are usually cheaper. If you use Google Earth the hotels will show on the map.
see what hotwire is charging for a room in center city philadelphia - if you are in the city it's easier just take the broad street subway line to the game and back and you'll have a much better time downtown than down by the stadiums
or not - i just threw in 1 night on the 6th and downtown is expensive with few open options
maybe there could be some B&Bs on a less expensive route ..............
