Can anyone help.....more good news on page 8!!!

I don't usually do this, but I am desperate.
We adopted a kitten last week. My older cat Jenny was not to thrilled to say the least. We have kept them separated, and she seemed to be coming around. Wed she started acting very weird. Meowing and then almost crying. She did this if we touched her and if we left her a lone. I don't think she is hurt, I think she is stressed. She has diarrhea in the litter box and will not eat. We gave her water using a straw and a finger.
She keeps going up into our bedroom, but is visible at all times. We have spoiled her with extra attention especially since the new arrival. Nothing seems to matter.
The vet says give her until tomorrow and then if no better bring her in.

I feel so to blame. She seemed lonely since her brother passed away last year and we thought this would zap her out of it.

If anyone has advice to offer I thank you in advanced.
This is a picture of Jenny. She is only just over 6 pounds so we don't have a lot of room to play with her going down hill.

Will she eat things other than cat food? You could try feeding her boiled hamburger and rice, or boiled chicken.

i have never been in this situation...i got my kitties together from the same litter!!! lots of good thoughts for you and Jenny and the new kitty! Hope Jenny starts eating and comes around!

what a beautiful tuxedo

an older cat will usually adapt easier with a kitten than with another mature cat.

mine are all close to the same age, and they are inside/outside cats, always got along after the initial couple of days.

Nope.....opened a can of chicken (usually dives at it) and she just looked at it and meowed this blood curdling sound.

Going to take her in tomorrow. It will be an emergency visit, but we owe it to her. I don't think they will do much, but at least it will stop us from worrying that she is sick. If it is just going to take more time we will grin and bear it.

Is Jenny up to date on her vaccines? How about the one you brought home?
Just wondering if maybe the new addition brought a cat virus.
Its too late tonight, but they sell this stuff called NutriCal High-Calorie Supplement for Dogs and Cat at PetSmart. Its a high calorie, vitamin-enhanced dietary supplement that provides extra energy and stimulates appetite during periods of stress.

Diamonds will eat anything- she would not eat that stuff. We tried to feed it to Senna, our anorexic kitty, and she was nearby so I offered it to her after he refused- she wouldn't touch it.

Good luck Caly, I know how rough it is when they're like that.

Try warming up the chicken- Jenny may be stuffed up and if a cat can't smell the food, it won't eat it (except Diamonds).

Oh gosh! Thoughts & Prayers!!!

We ran into something similar, the vet will probably give her a shot of B-12 and hopefully that will get the appetite going. It'll take a while for them to warm up to each other...and it may end up just being an uneasy truce, like our 'kids'...but hopefully it'll all work out.

I am sure that everything will be OK. But I am so happy that you are taking her to the vet just to be sure. You are doing the right thing.

With diarrhea and a blood-curdling meow, it sounds to me like she is SICK!

Glad you're getting her checked out tomorrow.

I have LOTS of (Hubby will say, "too much") experience with new cats.
None have ever acted this way except when they were seriously ill.

I had one cat, Cleo, from 1979-1990 when I added a kitty, Nutmeg, and Cleo NEVER accepted her.

When Mom moved in with me 2001, the two cats I had then (Sylvester & Nutmeg) fell in love with her 10-year-old cat, Puff, and we had a peaceful threesome for about three years until Puff and Nutmeg passed.

Then we added Misty, and she got along okay with Sylvester, until we added Squeaky and Crookedy, who Misty hated. She turned her ire on Sylvester. Squeaky and Crookedy died with a year or two.

Last year we added Tigger, and this year, Pippi. Tigger and Pippi are inseparable and lick each other like a mother and baby. Misty and Sylvester hate them both, so they stay outdoors, and the newest cats stay indoors.

The moral of the story is, there's no rhyme or reason. Some cats hit it off and some don't, for no particular reason, just like people. Relationships can change, but they usually don't.

I agree with carolinagirl that your older kitty may be sick, Lori... Possibly brought on by the new kitty???? Like a virus or something???

We brought home new kittens in 2001 to our 16 year old tortoiseshell (Pandora was her name, and tortoiseshells are not known for being friendly)... at first she ran away scared but did finally warm up to them... But then Pandora did actually do all that blood curdling sounds and howls, just before she died in 2003...

Sorry not to be of more help... I'm sure the vet willl have better advice!

I have no idea because I had an "only" cat....But when he got sick, he did the loud yelling and meowing...and refused food...He also took to dark places like the closet, and under the bed....and this is a cat that usually was glued to my side when I was home...

Sending prayers that everything's ok....and please let us know how things go.....

Strange thing is the 2 have never been within 10 feet of each other. The same room yes, and after we play with Marley we go wash with anti-bacterial soap and then touch Jenny.

Vet will see her at 10:40.

I will keep you posted. Keep the phin power going for us both please........keyboard is getting soggy so I gotta go.

Lori, Jenny does sound like she may be sick. I'm glad you're taking her to the vet. Please don't beat yourself up; if Jenny is sick, it's so likely to be simply coincidence that this happened just as Marley arrived.
