I like Radio Margaritaville, but...
...in my opinion they don't play enough Buffett tunes. Too many songs by other artists, too little Jimmy (and Jimmy is the reason I tune into RM).
What do you think -- do you like it the way it is or do you think the ratio of Buffett:Other Artists ought to be higher?

I suppose it depends to a large extent on whether you like the other artists they play. I don't DISlike most of them, but Santana, Marley, Springsteen, etc. and the various lesser known reggae/pop acts aren't my favorites, either.
I personally would vote for RM to be more like the all-Elvis or all-AC/DC channels, and focus more on their one featured artist.
Then again, I don't get a vote

Obviously, I like Buffett's music or else I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't have seen him 25 times, but I don't think I could take a whole station with nothing but Jimmy Buffett 24/7.
I liked RM the way it was before it went to Sirius. Back then, you had the concerts and the Buffett Buffet and a couple of songs here or there and that's about it.
As I understand it, RM was started by Buffett with the idea of playing music he liked, but never heard on the radio.
You had Feats at Five, the Grateful Dead Hour, Little Steven's Undergroud Garage, guest DJs, Vintage Vinyl, Bubba Whartz, etc. and, in between, all kinds of artists you just don't ever hear on the radio.
It had a real pirate radio (no pun intended) spirit to it and it was a lot of fun. Now, it's just another over-produced Sirius station.
Now, whenever I turn it on, it's just Buffett music all the time. Like I said, I love his music, but I like other things, too. You don't really think that Buffett just sits around and listens to one artist all the time, do you?
Let's be honest, are the 200 different versions of "Southern Cross" really that signifigant that you have to hear them all? Most of what they play now are just different versions of the same songs.
In another thread, somebody said something about Sirius going under and RM going back to being an internet based station. I think that's the best thing that could happen to them. I'm not naive. I understand why they had to change to go on Sirius, but I just don't think the changes they made were good ones.
People who have only known the Sirius version of Radio Margaritaville may not understand it, but the original RM was a completely different kind of station.
I miss Vintage Vinyl.
Maybe they could compromise and do what some terrestrial stations are doing with digital radio. Have the regular station, in this case, RM, and turn it into an all Buffett station and then go to a second station that is the way RM used to be. "RadioMargaritavill Buffett 24/7" vs "RadioMargaritaville Classic".

I think it is becoming more like a regular radio station. I don't mind hearing other artists, however, I think they should play more of the "Trop Rock" or artists that don't get that much play on the regular stations. If I want to hear Bruce Springsteen or the Eagles, I would tune into WZLX here in Boston.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

And my favorite, the Coral Reefer Madness Hour.mikemck wrote:You had Feats at Five, the Grateful Dead Hour, Little Steven's Undergroud Garage, guest DJs, Vintage Vinyl, Bubba Whartz, etc. and, in between, all kinds of artists you just don't ever hear on the radio.
RM plays more than enough Buffett for me. I'd be fine with 2 or 3 cuts per hour, plus the Buffett buffets and concert replays.

I finally got around to signing up for Sirius last month after I won a radio in a raffle. I hardly ever listen to RM. I usually listen to E Street Radio, Classic Vinyl, The Loft, The Coffee House, some of the country channels because we don't get country radio in NY.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
That was good, too. That's how I discovered one of my favorite artists, Roger Guth.chippewa wrote:And my favorite, the Coral Reefer Madness Hour.
And Vintage Vinyl. I was a DJ. I know a lot about music, but I don't think I ever learned as much about rock music through the 60's and 70's as I did from that show. I used to love that show because I collect records and that show really made me want to dig deeper.
The ironic thing is, if I remember the explanation from way back, RM was never meant to be a vanity station. The last thing Buffett wanted was a station that just played him over and over.RM plays more than enough Buffett for me. I'd be fine with 2 or 3 cuts per hour, plus the Buffett buffets and concert replays.

I have to say that I enjoy RM quite a bit, and feel we are lucky we have it. However, if I could have one request, it would be to play some more obscure Buffett songs during the Buffett Buffets. I dont know if it's just me, but it seems like theyre playing covers like Southern Cross, Brown Eyed Girl, and Scarlet Begonias more and more during the Buffets. I'm sorry if I'm way off the mark there, but maybe I'm tuning in at the wrong times...

Bought a new car with XM a few months back, and was thrilled to get RM when the merge finally took place a few weeks ago. But, I too am disappointed with the lack of Buffett. Aside from the buffet or concert replays, seems like all they play are live cuts from Wrigley/Boston, or a rotation of live versions of SYKBH. And the the majority of the reggae they play is crap IMO. A few decent bands here and there, but most of it is pop music, not reggae. I can't wait 'til the '09 tour starts and I can jam to the live shows while working though.
