From where I work, on the western edge of Mira Mar MCAB, I could hear the explosion. From my desk I can hear the jets flying daily, in some cases just above our building. To me that has always been and still is the sound of freedom. This is just a tragic and sad event (4 dead on the ground, pilot is ok and in Balboa Military Hospital for observations). Still the FA-18 is one of the military's safest aircraft and Mira Mar has litterally millions of flights a year. A tragedy like this could just as easily happened at a commercial airport. My prayers go to the Lee family. I heard a mailman on the radio this morning who had to litterally dive for cover tell his account of the crash. WOW is all I can say.

Till I just Googled the nearby high school, I was mixing up Miramar with Camp Pendleton in my mind. Wow, that really was in a populated area.

Phin Power for all those affected :(

Apparently the pilot lost power to his engines (see article)

A Grandmother (visiting from S Korea), Mother and two daughters were killed in the house that the jet crashed into. The Father was at work. :(

Here's a link to some private photos taken by one of the first people on the scene. Nothing gory, but a lot of destruction of a pretty nice neighborhood.

My heart goes out to this man. Even in the midst of this horrible tragedy, his thoughts are for the pilot:

A Korean immigrant who lost his wife, two children and mother-in-law when a Marine Corps jet slammed into the family's house said Tuesday he did not blame the pilot, who ejected and survived.
Dong Yun Yoon addresses reporters Tuesday, a day after a jet crashed into his home and killed four of his relatives.

"Please pray for him not to suffer from this accident," a distraught Dong Yun Yoon told reporters gathered near the site of Monday's crash of an F/A-18D jet in San Diego's University City community.

"He is one of our treasures for the country," Yoon said in accented English punctuated by long pauses while he tried to maintain his composure.

"I don't blame him. I don't have any hard feelings. I know he did everything he could," said Yoon, flanked by members of San Diego's Korean community, relatives and members from the family's church.

Just watching this poor man try to talk about his loss is heartbreaking.

Witnesses say there was no engine noise as the plane fell directly down out of the sky.
Could you even imagine your world suddenly gone... your entire family... taken in a swift, silent blink of an eye??

So many people attended a service for the Joon family last night that many people had to listen on speakers from the front lawn of the church. This has really touched a lot of San Diegians...myself included. I lost 1 child and have struggled to cope, I cannot imagine losing your entire family.
All my prayers and phin power to the Joon's
