My wife did a sweet thing today.

Post by bestseller92 »

Knowing I was a big Buffett fan she picked up what she thought was a Buffett CD that I didn't yet have, as a "stocking stuffer".

Well it WAS a CD that I didn't have. Problem was it WASN'T a Buffett CD at all -- it was an imposter.

The CD was called "Island Jams" or some such thing, and it was chock full of Buffett songs, but they were done by some outfit called "Jimmy and the Parrots".

We took it back unopened and got a refund (and I bought "Christmas Island" on the same trip to the store).

Actually it sort of annoyed me, not the fact that my wife unknowingly bought it (she was in a hurry and didn't read the packaging thoroughly), but that there's a group and record company out there trying to make dough by getting people to buy their record THINKING it's a genuine Buffett disc. Unethical, IMO.

:) Just a little FYI... if you search on "Jimmy and the Parrots" in Related Artists, Who's going to, Events, and Social area, you'll find that they are well liked as a Trop Rock artist, and they perform at a lot of PH Phlockings. :D

Actually, Jimmy and the Parrots are a very legit Buffett and others cover band. They are very high energy and extremely entertaining. They played on the main stage at MOTM this year. Their name could be a bit confusing but they are certainly not out there to cheat unsuspecting Buffett fans. They have some great original music as well as their cover songs. (We Owe It All To Jimmy being one of them). That was a sweet gesture by your wife. I would recommend going back and picking up the CD set. I don't think you'd be sorry. And if you ever get the opportunity to see them, DO IT!! They are great!

yes, yes.... seen them before! love'em!!

More of a tribute band than an impostor........ I haven't seen their packaging on their cd though, so can't speak for that.

I don't know diddly about "Jimmy and the Parrots", but my problem isn't with the fact that they're a JB cover band, but with the sneaky way they try to get people to buy their record "by mistake". Yes, I know if you're a real Parrothead you'll know that "Jimmy and the Parrots" isn't JB, but a casual fan buying a gift in a hurry might not.

I am encouraged that she found a CD from a Trop Rock act other than Jimmy Buffett on the shelf! That she found it in Oklahoma surprises me, I never saw any when I lived there.

Most artists in the genre are independents and sell CDs from their websites or at the bars where they play.

I might guess a record store in Tulsa or the City but I would've never thought to look there. (I know how hard it is to get a new product on the shelf.)

I can't see anything sneaky about it. That's the band's name, and has been for years. Nowhere does it say that it's Jimmy Buffett performs on it. Jimmy and the Parrots are a first-class act, and have been staples of the trop-rock scene for years. I just can't see any attempt at deception there.

I might just head out to Walmart and get that as a stocking stuffer for my husband! 8)

But if it was a stocking stuffer, how did you get it on Dec. 13? We don't stuff our stockings until Dec. 24 and open them on Dec. 25.

I saw this at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago in the "Featured Artists" section. I almost bought it but there are too many Buffett songs on it for me. Only 3 original songs. I kept browsing and almost fell on the floor when I found Eric Stone's "Scuba Tunes Vol. 1". *cha-ching!* SOLD!

If it doesn't say it's a "Jimmy Buffett" cd, then I don't really see how it's deceptive. Additionally, one should be filed under "B" and the other one would be under "J". If anything, the store should be blamed for filing them together if she found it in with the Buffett cd's.

I don't know if that's the CD as far as the song set, but no, that's not the cover. The cover of this thing had palm trees, "Island Jams" printed on it, and below that, "featuring Jimmy and the Parrots".

While I don't think this is totally deceptive on Jimmy and the P's part, it is unfortunate that they so blatantly profit on someone else's hard work. Clearly, the real Jimmy is not immune to a few covers per disc (or maybe an entire disc lately), but at the very least he takes more obscure songs and adds his own sound to it. Jimmy and the Parrots take the most recognizable Trop Rocker, and cover his songs in a...Trop Rock style. It's always great to hear a great acoustic cover of a song you know by heart (Jack Johnson does a great Pirate Looks on "The September Sessions"), but c'mon, these guys may as well tour as Jimy Bufet and the Koral Riefer Band".

Unethical? Come on. That's a bit harsh. For one thing, Jimmy Maraventano is one of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet. And Buffett gets some mailbox money from those covers. Although I'm sure it's not one of Buffett's major income streams.

Yes, that was really sweet of your wife. I think you'll appreciate the positive comments about Jimmy and the Parrots and other similar artists and will in time appreciate too what they do along with entertaining.
