Was just talking to friends in KW today. They said the new airport isn't the same as our old favorite, but still has some funkiness to it. We booked today for April 1-8, but are coming in via the jet boat from Fort Myers (cheaper flights from Akron, fun, funky hotel across from the beach and a great way to leave KW--sunset from the boat with a full bar on the boat). We will go out to the airport just to check it out. My friend said that they just built a 600 room hotel in Orlando for less money than it took to build the airport. The coulda just spiffed it up a bit and put bathrooms in the departure area and everyone would have been happy.

I've just been doing some research on some off-the-beaten track or lesser known watering holes in Key West, and here's what I've found....feel free to give any feedback on these!
Don's Place (Truman & Grinnell)
Bottle Cap Lounge & Liquor Store (Simonton)
Monkey Bar (Simonton)
Wagon Wheel (Angela/Duval)
Smallest Bar (Duval)
Tiki Bar @ the Galleon
I'm thirsty!

I just booked us back into the Key West Bed and Breakfast on William Street for April 1 through 8! Had planned to go to the Caribbean, but the costs are just too high right now, so we decided to "go home." We'll be at the Schooner by about 3 p.m. on the 1st. Coming in by boat from Fort Myers. Yay!!! With 12 inches of snow predicted today here, I am sitting in front of the 'puter looking at the webcams. I can dream!

We just booked at the Tucker Inn Cottages (
www.tuckerinn.com) on Cudjoe Key, about 20 miles from KW, near Mangrove Mamas and right on the ocean.
We've been twice in the last few years but this time we have a boat and are taking it with us.
Look out coral reef! Here I come!!

sonofabeach,
Not a bad drive from Cudjoe Key to Key West. We rented a house last year on Cudjoe Key. Things start to look the same at night. Had a couple of landmarks to look for before Cudjoe. There's a Baseball Field at a school one or two keys from Cudjoe. They usually had it lit up at night. Our turn was at the Sheriff's station, which is lit up real well, looks like you will be just a little ways past that. I don't think there was one of the green city signs for Cudjoe Key when you are coming from Key West, but I could be wrong. The mile marker signs also help but some of them are pretty hard to catch at night.
Not sure if Bahia Honda is within distance for your boat or not. But do check it out.

Check out the No Name Pub on Big Pine Key. Watch out for the Key Deer

Real good restaurant in Marathon at the Keys Fisheries. The Lobster Reuben is great. It's also plenty big, may want to split it between two of ya.

There was a nice Italian restaurant on Cudjoe just down from our place. We never did go there but they always seemed to be busy. Not sure if they have a spot to pull the boat up to or not but they are on the water with a large boat landing.

Also checkout the avocodas in the stores. Most are the size of grapefruit. Makes some great guacamole.
Enjoy the trip!!!!

Digitalprintman, I am all about AVACODO'S. I could just eat these all week. Ok have to have fresh seafood too.
We will be going to KW (1st time) May 1st. Care to share where I can find these giant avacodo's?

We've been to the No Name Pub but I'm dying to go back.
Porky's is another great food dive on Marathon that I can't wait to get back to.
We've been to Bahia Honda a few times as well. One day we're gonna camp there.
This we'll be our third time on Cudjoe and I really like it there. Close enough to KW but also away from the crowds. One of my favorite things to do there is watching the sunset from way out on the water in the kayaks provided by the cottages. This time it will be from my boat.
I'm gonna look into some of those places.
Thanks!

Might be expensive. Just read in the NY Times that avocados are going to be outrageously expensive due to the drought/fires in Calif where most of them are grown. I'll still pay for them. Unfortunately, here in Ohio, we almost only get Haas avocados, which are good, but mostly tiny.

We found the Big Avocados at most of the super markets in Key West, Big Pine and Marathon. Not all of the markets had them though. Not sure where the markets get theirs from. Or if these are from California. But chances are they come from Florida or somewhere else in the Caribbean. Prices seemed fairly reasonable last year. But may be higher this year with any of the shortages of California's supply.

89 days till KW! From the tripadvisor forums, I received a spreadsheet from someone who compiled an alphabetical list of more than 100 bars/restaurants with bars/drinking establishments on Key West! Now, I don't think that ContinentalDrifterIII and I will be able to hit 100 in 4 and a half days, but there are some great suggestions on that list! If anyone wants a copy of it, I can email it!

Everything seems better in Key West.......I've been going through fish sandwich withdrawal for the past year! Not pretty.....
You know, those freshly broiled fish fillets (usually mahi mahi), lettuce, tomato, "special" sauce that each shack has, and a nice hard roll......why do I torture myself like this?
Here's wishing you a great trip and keep the faithful informed about your activites, OK?
