Tybee Island

Post by Bob Roberts »

Looking at staying here for a couple of days this summer and driving into Savannah to do some touristy things.....

Where to stay?

What to do?

Where to eat?

I had never heard of Tybee island.. until last night!! Reading a great piece of 'fluff' called Savannah Breeze, by Mary Kay Andrews, set in Savannah and Tybee Island [smilie=battingeyes.gif]
I'm a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling!

Haven't made it to Tybee but have been to Savannah. Do plan to spend some time in town. Quite a bit of history and wonderful places to see. Go down to the riverfront cobblestone road. Tybee is also good. Had a friend that lived in Savannah and they always enjoyed going to Tybee Island.

Do try to eat at the Lady and Sons. Paula Dean's restaurant. The buffet is excellent. Also have menu that can be ordered off of. They don't take reservations but you put your name in at the restaurant for lunch or dinner at 9:30 am. Check the website:

Enjoy your visit, we'll be down there in February for a day.

The Trolley Tour around Savannah is very informative. Checkout the different city squares throughout the downtown area.

You may want to watch the movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", before going. One of the main characters, the Lady Chablis does perform occasionally in Savannah. Check the website, currently no dates for 2009:

I've never spent the night on Tybee, but love to go there for a day trip.

I did NOT like the food at the Crab Shack everyone raves about. Could have been a bad day for them ... everything tasted "leftover" and old.

If you're going to Savannah ... read "the book" and go to Bonaventure Cemetery ... it is stunning.

Lady and Sons is way over hyped, IMHO. I prefer Mrs. Wilkes' for the real flavor of Old Savannah.

I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Greek place down on the River ... it's awesome and reasonably priced.

Take "the book" tour ... I've been on all of them, and "the book" tour is by far the best.

Get a tuna fish sandwich at Clary's ... the drug store mentioned in the book and used in the film.

I'm not as fond of the film as the book, but it is growing on me ... I love Alison Eastwood ... don't rely on the film as your touchstone, though ... because a LOT of license was taken in the film ... read the book.

I missed Lady Chablis the last time I was in town. If she's there, catch her cabaret show. It's a hoot.

Enjoy!

Tybee: The Crab Shack restaurant is great. But it is over the water, and I am not sure what their winter hours are. In the spring/summer/fall you eat on a huge patio looking over the marsh. Their is a stage at the end of the patio. Love it there.
Thunderbolt: The first area in Savannah once you get off of the islands. Tubby's Tankhouse, used to have a Buffett night. Not sure if they still do. Another neat bar overlooking the rivers/marsh.
Savannah: Gorgeous city. Do the tourist things. It is a very hospitable welcoming city. As for food, go to Mrs. Wilkes. No reservations, only open for breakfast and lunch, but the food is great and there is lots of it. If given a choice between Lady and Sons and Mrs. WIlkes I would chose Mrs. Wilkes.

I had forgotten this place. There is a walk in/take out side that has the same menu but is cheaper. So if you want to eat in the park across the street on the river, and don't mind take out containers go there. There are also a couple tables on that side.

Kevin Barry's on River Street. Great Irish bar, great Irsih food, and usually a good drunk Irish guy singing on weekend nights.

ETP, I would say yes, but you had just finished dissing the crab shack.

Returned from the trip down to Florida for Feb and March. We made it up to Savannah. Once during Daytona Speedweek and then on our way home to Iowa in March. Both times we ate at Mrs. Wilkes. It was great both times. There is so much fabulous food you can hardly even just taste them all.

During the first visit we ate lunch at Mrs. Wilkes and then dinner about 7:30 at The Lady and Sons. Wow were we full. Did not do Paula Deen's buffett. But I had the Shrimp and Grit, very tasty.

Do I have to chose which is better?? I might agree that Mrs. Wilkes is maybe better but Paula Deen's is also very, very good. Eat at both and you decide.

Mrs. Wilkes is only open for lunch these days. 11 am - 2 pm.

Here is the website:

http://www.mrswilkes.com/index.html

We still enjoy the Lady and Sons and did run into Bobby Deen (Paula's youngest son) in the store. He was greeting everyone and posed for pictures. One woman said she and her family had tracked down the Key Lime Pie place that Jamie and Bobby had on their show. It was the Blonde Giraffe. So then I spoke with Bobby about Blue Heaven. He had not made it there. I just happened to have a photo of my Lobster Benedict from breakfast one morning on my cellphone (had to send the pic to my girlfriend to rub it in). I described how it was made. He said he would find Blue Heaven when he was down next time to Key West. :P

There is a place on Tybee called Beachside Colony-it is a bunch of condos grouped together. There is a place to eat there called Marlin Monroes. Any one who frequents this website would love it.Very good food (fried grouper sandwich!!!!) very laid back and right on the beach. I live just a few minutes away,so if you have any questions feel free to ask. My husband and I go there at least once a week cause it is like a mini vacation. For a little more upscale dining Hunter House and Sundae Cafe are great.

Looks like I'm heading to Tybee in July... looking at rentals on the north end, for my daughters and I. Is there any reason we should not stay at the north end?

Thank you!

Check out The Crab Shack one night for dinner.

It's very touristy, but the Low Country Boil and Large Seafood Platters are great and they play Buffett almost exclusively (and not just the yellow album)

Very casual

I know it's the wrong beach, but I was kind of hoping that Jimmy and Martina McBride will be there, and ride bikes with me on the beach, and play guitar and sing around the campfire, and share in a low country boil on the beach!

My girls are hoping that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth will hang out with them at the carnival!
