Sail On Eartha Kitt

NEW YORK — Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died at age 81, a family friend said.

Kitt died Thursday of colon cancer and was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, said Andrew Freedman.

The self-proclaimed "sex kitten" famous for her catlike purr, was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and getting a third nomination. She also was nominated for two Tony Awards and a Grammy.

Her rendition of "Santa Baby" is on my ipod with my Christmas playlist. I was playing it this morning while we opened presents. She will be missed

I didn't realize she was ill. It wasn't that long ago I saw her on TV and she looked good.
