Anyone know anything about Scientology?

I'll be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about Scientology. I know it started in the early 50's by followers of L.Ron Hubbard's Dianetics or something like that.
I know Tom Cruise BLASTED Brooke Shields for her anti-depressant use during her postpartum depression battles.
Which makes me wonder and I'm curious if anyone knows the answer. Would anti seizure meds be against the Scientology belief system? Does anyone know?
Now I will readily admit that Jett Travolta's untimely death is what has sparked my curiosity. I believe all of the different religions have the right to believe in the manner they choose. I just don't understand why some are against some medical advances because God gave us brains; gave the doctors knowledge. That being said I can also understand some lines of thinking on some of the stances against certain medical procedures. I just don't know anything about Scientology.

Some Sci-Fi writer had a theory and it became a "religion"
IMHO, it's a crock of s***

It's not really that much different then Moonies or the Guyana Tragedy (or even Heaven's Gate

)
Rumor has it that the reason his book is such a "best seller" that the Church of Scientology buys up enough copies to ensure it's there, not that it's necessarily a good read.

What I've found to be the most different is the number of "famous" and some intelligent people that are involved in it. Forget Cruise - he's a nutjob but Travolta? It takes a dadgum smart man to be able to fly those big jets.
agreed - I have issues with a "religion" started in the 50's by a science fiction writer.

If I'm not mistaken, Jett Travolta was also autistic, but I'm not sure if I'm actually remembering that or if I'm making it up.
That aside, I have no idea what the Scientology stance is on medicating for seizure disorders (which can be associated with autism).
John Travolta always seemed to be a pretty level-headed dude.

I've seen reports that said he was and others that said no. I saw that he did suffer from Kawasaki disease/syndrome/whatever it is,

The religious aspects of Scientology (or Christianity or Islam for that matter) I won't ridicule, since my own adherence to the Pastafarian tenets of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster would also be open to ridicule. To each his own, I say.
But I would point out that believing in the tenets of Scientology (thetans, reincarnation, galactic empires, etc) and practicing the faith (auditing) will cost you a pretty penny - tens of thousands of dollars - whereas my church charges nothing and requires no expensive rituals or purchases to advance in the church hierarchy.
I believe this explains why the Church of Scientology is extremely wealthy in contrast to my church, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which has no financial assets whatsoever.
Finally, Scientologists are vehemently opposed to the medical treatment of mental illness, because they believe that the process of
auditing ($$$$) is the only true path to wholeness.
I prefer to commune with the noodly appendages of the Flying Spaghetti Monster to maintain my spiritual health.
I hope this makes things clear.

Believe it or not the South Park Scientology episode is pretty close to the truth.

From what I have heard on various programs tonight, Jett may or may not have been autistic-the family has never confirmed it. As for Kawasaki's--from what I heard, it would be unusual for it to still be active in someone of Jett's age--usually it is something that goes away or becomes dormant before age 10.
One would hope they will learn something from the autopsy, but nothing will diminish the profound sadness this family must be experiencing.

I hate to tell you this but no - it doesn't.
However it DOES take a dadgum smart man to be able to bilk folks out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in return for the dubious privilege of being pronounced a 'Clear'.

Food for thought, and I promise I'm not trying to "start" anything. Just presenting an idea:
cult /kʌlt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [kuhlt] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
7. the members of such a religion or sect.
8. any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

All religion is evil - especially the made up ones.
Oh wait - I just said all religion is evil.
You don't have to be in a church to do 'good deeds'.

I will share this with you, although my church isn't big on proselytizing. You will have to abandon your preconceived ideas about the foundations of religious belief. Just keep in mind we have as much 'proof' as any of those other guys.

On an interesting side note, pirates are central to the Pastafarian creed, in that they are regarded as divine beings - almost saints really.

Isn't it great....and it makes more sense than scientology to me!
My daughter found it one day when she was doing research for a school project on something.....
