Bag of Wishes - Buffett Style

Post by Kobe »

Hi,

My husband and I are talking our daughter and her best friend on a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas. They are both huge Jimmy Buffett fans – Jimmy has influenced countless school projects (compare a Jimmy Buffet song to each chapter of Lord of the Flies), they’re been to two concerts and as many Margaritaville restaurants as they can convince us to take them too. We even have a newly designed Buffett themed basement painted in Caribbean colors.

The girls are both 17 and have been best friends since they were 3. In the fall they are likely going to colleges in different states. This cruise is what they wanted more than anything to celebrate together.

I really like the planning part and the cruise is in February so its getting close.

We made Bags of Wishes for friends when they graduated a couple years ago - she helped so it wouldn’t be a surprise – unless we made everything Jimmy Buffett themed. The idea is to wrap them as little gifts and arrange to have people on the cruise randomly give them to the girls.

I could really use some help connecting the things to Buffett songs –
Here goes:

A toy to remind them to have fun?

A watch or alarm clock (this too will pass)?

A little plastic fish (a reminder to "seize the carp": carpe diem)(sorry, it's an old family joke) FINS

A roll of Smarties candy (obvious).

post-it notes (wish that they stick to their morals / friends / family ties)

highlighter (wish that they find the important things in life)

whiteout / big eraser (wish that they can fix their mistakes)

binder clips (wish that they can hold everything in their lives)

permanent marker (wish that they leave a lasting mark on the world)

mini stapler (not sure of a good wish, but definitely could fit in somehow)

50 cents (wish that they remember their family/friends are only a phone call away...that is how much a pay phone costs now right? :-) )

carabiner or maybe Altoids (wish that they remember that something small can be so strong)

bandaid (wish that their boo-boos remain small)

And a nice silk flower with that wise advice attached: Don't forget to smell the flowers.

Marbles (for when they feel like they're losing theirs)?

An small envelope of lemonade mix to symbolize When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade?

Any part of the list can be changed – take something off, add something else. We can take things from his songs and adapt the items to fit.

Hopefully this makes sense –
One more thing – does Jimmy ever sign and send autographed photos? I’d love to add that to the list.

Thanks for your help – I can’t wait to read the suggestions

Great idea!!

Yes, JB does sign pics....send a request to Margaritaville in KW, but I don't know if this is too late to get a pic by Feb.
Good luck :D

permanent marker - permanent reminder of a temporary feeling
50 cents - everybody's on the phone
Some people never find it, some only pretend
But me, I just want to live happily ever after every now and then.

A small thimble...it can be her Tin Cup Chalice...remind her that the best things in life can be simple.
You only have two options - havin' fun or freakin' out...

THANK you so much - I knew you guys would be better at this than I am. I love the responses so far. This is going to be so much fun. PLEASE keep them coming - I'd love to end up with about 15 or so.

I was thinking about going to a paint your own pottery place and making them a cheeseburger in paradise plate - maybe I could get the waiters to use it one time!

Not quite sure if this is what you're thinking, but I'll give it a shot.

give each of them a picture of the 2 of them at a beach where they had a good time = One Particular Harbor, = wish for them to always remain as close as they were then :-?

give each of them a small calendar of one sort or another = Come Monday =
a wish for them to call each other on a Monday nite just to chat.

give them each a small lighthouse = A Salty piece of Land = a wish for them to always have a guiding light.

a screw and a shot...........um no , never mind they're only 17

the watch or alarm clock = It's 5 o'clock somewhere = a wish for them to maketime for others :-?

They're great - this is making me very happy and very sad at the same time. Our son left for college 2 years ago and it was so different. He was excited and ready and knew exactly what he wanted to do. He's loved every minute and has made great friends.

Maybe its because she's our last to go - but I'm not feeling ready. I'm so excited about making this trip extra special.

Keep the ideas coming :)

How about a "Fins Up" bracelet--meaning obvious and a portion of the proceeds go to charity.

This is such a great idea. I'm going to print it out even tho my 'keets have 'keets going to college already..can always use it for my parrothead friends for other reasons. Gave my concert cohort keets Fins Up bracelets and BN lanyards for Christmas presents.

a small key chain sized globe or a map, or a piece of a map = Take another Road = A wish for them to try new directions in their lives :-?

How could we have missed this one............... a bank = A Bank of Bad Habits = a wish for them to always have fun ticket money!

or this one
a fruitcake!!!!!!!! maybe those fruity candy's would work, or a box of junior mints, = Fruitcakes = A wish for them to not always take life so seriously and have fun and act like a fruitcake once in a while

I bet we can buy rum cakes on the ship - that would work.

Any thoughts on how to incorporate:
flip flops
peanut butter
breathe in breathe out
pirates
cheeseburgers
